‘Reiwa’ Chosen as Name for Rule of New Japanese Emperor
April 01, 2019

FFCF901C-6

Japanese officials have chosen a name for the period of rule of Japan’s incoming emperor.(日本の当局は、日本の次期天皇の統治期間の名称を選定した。)

Rules require that the name have two Japanese characters, known as Kanji, which are easily read and written but are unusual or literary in nature. The first character can be defined to mean “order” and the second as “harmony” or “peace.”(慣例により、名称は漢字として知られている日本語文字二つからなることが求められている。

The term comes from a poem about plum blossoms in a collection of Japanese poems called “Manyoshu.” It is said to have been written about 1,300 years ago.(この言葉は、「万葉集」と呼ばれる日本の詩集の中にある梅の花の詩に由来している。

Over more than one thousand years, Japanese era names have come from Chinese classic literature. Abe said the “Manyoshu” was chosen because it was Japan’s oldest collection of poetry written by royal family members and ordinary people.(千年以上にわたり、日本の元号は中国の古典文学に由来していた。

' unusual or literary in nature'というのは…

Tell the Actors What to Do in Your Next Movie

The Netflix experiment began with movie-watchers choosing a character’s morning cereal.(Netflix

In “Bandersnatch,” the first decision viewers could make was what the main character ate for breakfast.(“ Bandersnatch”

Soon, Netflix may be letting viewers choose everything from the best on-screen romance to the safest path to escape a killer.(すぐに、Netflixはスクリーン上での最上の恋愛から、殺人者から逃げるための一番安全な経路まで、全てを視聴者に選ばせているかもしれない。)

Hastings said “Bandersnatch” gave Netflix programmers valuable information. They were able to better understand how long people want to participate with interactive programming, and how many choices they might want to make.(Hastingsによれば、「Banndersnatch」はNetflixのプログラマーに貴重な情報をもたらした。

Fast Shrinking Greenland Glacier Now Growing Again

New research has found that a major Greenland glacier that was once one of the fastest shrinking on Earth is now growing again.(新しい研究によって、グリーンランドの主要な氷河が、かつては地球上で最も急速に縮小しているものの一つであったが、今では再び成長していることが判明した。)

Scientists from the American space agency NASA recently reported their findings about the Jakobshavn glacier, which sits off the island’s west coast.(アメリカの宇宙機関NASAの科学者らが先日、同島西海岸沖に位置するヤコブスハブン氷河に関する発見を報告した。)

NASA said Jakobshavn had been Greenland’s fastest-flowing and fastest-thinning glacier for the past 20 years. During that time, it was the single largest source of mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet.(NASAによれば、ヤコブスハブン氷河は過去20年間、グリーンランドで最速で流出し、最速で薄くなっている氷河だった。

Researchers involved in the study say that, since 2016, the glacier has experienced major thickening. It is also flowing more slowly and moving toward the ocean, instead of retreating inland.(この研究に参加した研究者らによれば、2016年以降、この氷河には大幅な肥厚が起きている。

The system is similar to El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean.

Diet Containing Lots of Eggs May Be Linked to Heart Disease
March 30, 2019

The JAMA Network Open published the new report in March. It combines data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the average number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.(JAMAネットワークオープンは3月、新しい研究報告を発表した。

She told the Reuters news service that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol in a person’s diet. Individuals with higher levels of cholesterol in their diet are at increased risk for the development of heart disease later in life,

However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy.(しかしアレンはこう言い加えた。

“I’m not advocating people take them completely out of their diets,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in moderation.”(「私は人々の食生活から卵を完全に排除することを推奨しているのではありません」と彼女は話す。

“If you’re consuming a huge amount of processed meats, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,” Andersen said.(「もし大量の加工肉を消費しているのであれば、何個の卵を食べていても構いません」とAndersenは述べている。)

Also, Andersen said, the study is observational, meaning it can only show there is a link between egg consumption and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also consuming a lot of bacon, Andersen said.(またAndersenによると、この研究は観察的なものだ。

College student Grace DeNoya is used to people laughing when they learn what she is studying. Her degree centers on the marijuana plant -- an intoxicating drug that is illegal in many parts of the world.(大学生のGrace DeNoyaは、彼女が何を専攻しているか知った時に人々が笑うことに慣れている。

I say, ‘No, it’s a serious degree, a chemistry degree first and foremost.

Schools are answering changes related to the legalization of marijuana in the United States.(合衆国におけるマリファナ合法化に関連した変化に学校が対応しつつある。)

Arcview Market Research reports on the cannabis industry. The organization estimates the industry will support 467,000 jobs by 2022.(Arcview Market Researchが大麻産業について報告書を出している。

A ‘fast track’ to the cannabis industry(大麻業界への「出世コース」)

Colleges are creating many different offerings to answer the expected growth in cannabis-related jobs. Colorado State University offers a cannabis studies program centering on social, legal, political and health effects. Ohio State University, Harvard, the University of Denver and Vanderbilt University offer classes on marijuana policy and law.

She said the future looks good for students in this area.(彼女によれば、この分野の学生にとって将来の見通しは良さそうだ。)

“More jobs are being created in this space than in any other space in North America, with salaries sometimes more competitive than other industries,” Humiston said. “With every new state that legalizes, tons of jobs are opening up.”(「北米では、この分野は他のどの分野よりも多くの雇用が創出されています。

Mother Russia: South Florida Experiences a Rise in ‘Birth Tourism’
March 30, 2019

Every year, hundreds of pregnant Russian women travel to the United States to give birth.(毎年、何百人もの妊娠中のロシア人女性が出産するために合衆国を訪れている。)

The reason: The U.S. Constitution gives citizenship to any person born on American soil.(その理由は、合衆国憲法がアメリカの国土で生まれたすべての人に国籍を与えることだ。)

The women pay anywhere from $20,000 to as much as $50,000 to people who take care of their travel documents, hotels and hospital stays, often in Florida.(女性たちは、旅行書類、ホテルや病院での滞在を世話する人に対し、2万ドルから5万ドルものお金を支払っている。

There are no numbers on how many women travel to the United States to give birth. The Center for Immigration Studies estimated that in 2012, more than 35,000 foreign women entered the U.S. to give birth and then left the country.(何人の女性が出産のために合衆国に旅行しているのかについての数字はない。

there are 30 similar companies in the area.(似たような会社はこの地域に30社ある)
“With $30,000, we would not be able to buy a (house) for our child or do anything, really. But we could give her freedom. That’s actually really cool,” said Olga Zemlyanaya.
