Dandelions: One of the Healthiest Foods on the Planet
May 06, 2019

4B23ACC2

it is no surprise that people love flowers!

There is probably no flower more hated, or misunderstood, than the bright yellow dandelion.(明るい黄色をしたタンポポほど嫌われ、また誤解されている花はおそらくないでしょう。)

In the United States, they are considered “weeds,” the name for any unwanted plant. In an effort to have the perfect green grass lawn, people try their best to kill all dandelions with chemical products.(合衆国では、それは「雑草」と見なされます。

The most hated flower on Earth is one of the healthiest to eat!(地球上で最も嫌われている花は、食べると最も健康的な物の1つなのです。)

Dandelions are a great source of vitamin K and also are a good source of vitamins A and C. They also have vitamin E, folate and small amounts of other B vitamins. Also, they provide lots of iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium.(タンポポはビタミンKの卓越した供給源であり、ビタミンAとCの良好な供給源でもあります。

Russian officials are investigating Sunday’s crash of a plane that burst into flames during an emergency landing. The crash killed 41 people.(ロシア当局は、日曜に起きた飛行機墜落事故の調査を行っている。

The crash happened shortly after the plane took off from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. The plane was to fly to the northern city of Murmansk. Within minutes, the pilots requested an emergency landing.(この墜落事故は、航空機がモスクワのシェレメーチエヴォ国際空港を離陸した直後に起きた。

Russian media reported one of the pilots said lightning had struck the plane. Flight attendant Tatiana Kasatnika said in a video on YouTube that the plane had taken off in a storm. Before the crash, she said she heard a loud noise and saw a burst of light.(ロシアメディアの報道によれば、パイロットの一人は飛行機に雷が落ちたと話している。

The National Defense Strategy Commission (NDSC) is an expert group set up by Congress to examine national defense policies. In November, the Commission released its final report.(国家防衛戦略委員会(NDSC)は、国防政策を検討するために議会が設立した専門家グループだ。

It discussed possible results of war between China and the U.S. “Americans could face a decisive military defeat,” the group reported.(委員会では中国と合衆国の戦争がもたらし得る結果について議論した。

Between 2015 and 2021, China’s military budget is expected to jump 55 percent from $167.9 billion to $260.8 billion.(2015

The Chinese navy now has about 400 warships and submarines. The U.S. Naval War College projected that it could have more than 530 warships and submarines by the year 2030.(中国海軍は現在約400隻の軍艦と潜水艦を保有している。

In comparison, The U.S. Defense Department said the U.S. Navy has 288 warships and submarines at this time. The Chinese military and its leaders, however, say that while their navy has more ships, America has more powerful ones.

For now, many of China’s warships are smaller boats. But experts say the divide between China and other countries’ navies is narrowing in terms of size, quality and capability.(今のところ、中国の軍艦の多くは小型の艦船だ。

German Scientists Create See-Through Human Organs
May 05, 2019

Scientists in Germany say they have used new technology to create see-through human organs. They say the technology could lead to production of three-dimensional (3D) body parts for use in transplant operations.(ドイツの科学者は、透明な人間の臓器を作るために新しい技術を利用したと述べている。

The German researchers use lasers in a microscope to scan the organ to be replaced. The laser light helps them see the blood vessels and every single cell inside.(ドイツの研究者は顕微鏡でレーザーを使って交換する臓器をスキャンする。

The researchers then load the printer with stem cells, which can become any kind of cell in the body. The stem cells act as “ink” in the printer. They are injected into the correct position, making the organ fully operational.(その後、研究者はプリンターに幹細胞を充填する。

Erturk and his team plan to start by creating a transparent, bioprinted pancreas over the next two to three years. They hope to develop a human kidney within 5-6 years.(Erturkと彼のチームは、今後2、3年かけて透明なバイオ印刷された膵臓を作り出すことから始める予定だ。

Southeast Asia: Stop Sending Us Mountains of Plastic Waste
May 05, 2019

Wealthy countries are exporting millions of tons of plastic waste to Southeast Asia, where local recycling systems cannot process all of it.(裕福な国々は東南アジアに何百万トンものプラスチック廃棄物を輸出しているが、その地域のリサイクルシステムで全てを処理することはできない。)

In early 2018, China banned the import of plastic waste for recycling. The ban sent the international trade in recycled materials into disorder.(2018年初頭、中国はリサイクルのためのプラスチック廃棄物の輸入を禁止した。

Over half of the plastic --more than 3 million tons a year -- used to go to China. It is now being sent to Southeast Asia. Huge mountains of plastic are growing in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, among other countries.(プラスチックの半分以上 、年間300万トン以上、はかつては中国に行っていた。

The Malaysian village of Jenjarom is about 50 kilometers outside Kuala Lumpur. Nearby, one finds huge piles of plastic waste on the ground in the middle of a palm oil farm. Nobody is working to reduce the size of the piles. The writing on the bottles, boxes and plastic bags shows where they came from. Much of the waste has traveled thousands of kilometers from Europe and North America.(マレーシアのJenjarom村は、クアラルンプールから約50キロ離れた所にある。

Many Southeast Asian countries are beginning to restrict plastic waste imports. That forces the trash into markets with fewer controls, such as Indonesia and India.(多くの東南アジア諸国がプラスチック廃棄物の輸入を制限し始めている。

New Report Looks at Wedding Traditions Around the World
May 04, 2019

Researchers surveyed 20,000 newly married couples in 14 countries about their weddings. They found that in much of Europe and North America, September and October are the most popular months to get married.(研究者らは14カ国で2万人の新婚夫婦に結婚式について調査した。

In the United States, more than two-thirds of couples still want their parents’ approval before getting married. But less than 10 percent of couples in Italy and Spain do. In Colombia, the average wedding has 91 guests.

In Latin America overall, Goodson said, couples pay most of the cost. In Spain, parents often pay a large part of the cost. In Peru, Chile and Colombia, couples pay about 55 percent of wedding costs. A large number of them borrow money to cover it. In Italy, parents usually pay about 60 percent, the study said.(グッドソンによると、ラテンアメリカでは全般的に、カップルが費用のほとんどを負担している。

Witchcraft is traditional in the eastern European country.(魔術は東ヨーロッパ諸国の伝統だ。)

The rise of the internet and social media have helped to grow the business of Romania’s witch community. Many (of) the country’s estimated 4,000 witches are now getting customers from Europe, Asia and the United States.(インターネットとソーシャルメディアの台頭は、ルーマニアの魔女コミュニティのビジネスを成長させるのに役立った。

“A truly powerful witch can solve problems from a distance,” explains 20-year-old witch Cassandra Buzea.(「本当に強力な魔女は、遠くからでも問題を解決することができます」と20歳の魔女Cassandra Buzeaは説明する。)

They would not say how much money they earn, but they did say that a tarot reading starts at around 50 euros, or around $56.(彼らはどれだけのお金を稼いでいるかは言わなかったが、彼らの話では、タロット占いの料金は約50ユーロ、または約56ドルからとのことだ。)

Other more complex services, however, last weeks and can run into the hundreds.(他のもっと手間のかかる施術は、しかし、数週間かかり数百ドルに達することもある。)
