Sunscreen’s Chemicals Go Through Skin to Bloodstream
May 27, 2019

1BF0CC1E

The active chemicals of commonly-used sunscreens end up in a wearer’s blood. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, reported recently that the chemicals are present at much higher levels than current government health rules permit. For this reason, the researchers call for more safety studies.(一般的に使用されている日焼け止めの活性化学物質は、最終的に使用者の血液中に入ることになる。

The effects of plasma concentrations above the FDA’s limit is not known. The research team wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that there must be more studies on how the chemicals affect humans.(FDAの制限を超える血漿中濃度の影響は分かっていない。

But these results do not suggest that people should stop using sunscreen to protect against the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, researchers said.(しかしこの結果は、太陽の有害な紫外線(UV)から保護するために人々が日焼け止めを使用することをやめるべきだと言っているわけではないと、研究者らは述べている。)

'there were high levels of the chemicals in blood does not mean they are unsafe.'(血中に高レベルの化学物質が含まれていたからといって、それが安全でないことを意味すものではない。)

They fear that people may not understand it well and could stop using sunscreen.(彼らは、人々がそれをよく理解していない可能性があり、日焼け止めの使用をやめるかもしれないことを恐れている。)

Belgian Monks, Israeli Scientists Producing Beer From Long Ago
May 27, 2019

Beer lovers --- and makers -- are always looking for new and interesting versions of the drink. But recent efforts in Israel and Belgium are aiming to bring back beers from long ago.(ビール愛好家や製造業者は常に、新しくて面白いタイプのお酒を探している。

It has been 220 years since beer was produced at Grimbergen Abbey in Belgium, but the centuries-old tradition is set to return there. The abbey is home to a group of monks. Monks first began brewing beer at the Grimbergen Abbey in the 13th century. But they stopped doing so in the late 1700s, after French troops damaged parts of the property - including the brewing area.(ベルギーのGrimbergen修道院でビールが生産されていた頃から220年が経っているが、何世紀にもわたる伝統がここに戻ってくる。

The monks will aim to follow centuries-old methods for manufacturing beer. The directions come from a collection of old books found inside the abbey.(修道士たちはビールの製造にあたって何世紀も昔の製法に従うことを目指すことにしている。

The interest in ancient brewing methods is not limited to Belgium. Researchers in Israel announced recently they have removed yeast from the remains of containers found at ancient sites. They have used the remains to create a beer similar to the kind that Egyptian pharaohs enjoyed thousands of years ago.(古代の醸造方法に関心があるのはベルギーに限らない。

the Israeli scientists say this is the first time beer has been made from actual ancient yeasts.(イスラエルの科学者たちによれば、実際の古代の酵母からビールが作られたのはこれが初めてのことだ。)

World’s Oldest Fossil Fungus Found
May 27, 2019

Scientists made a big discovery in Canada, but it is something so small you need a microscope to see it.(科学者たちはカナダで大きな発見をしたが、それは、見るためには顕微鏡が必要なほど小さいものだ。)

The scientists reported discovering what they believe is the remains of the oldest-known fungus, which could be up to 1 billion years old. They found it in the Arctic area of Canada and named it Ourasphaira giraldae.(科学者たちは、知られている中で最古の菌類の化石と考えられる物を発見したと報告した。

The multi-celled fungus is an ancestor to a large group of organisms, which today includes mushrooms, yeasts and molds. Ourasphaira lived where a river runs into a sea, about 900 to 1 billion years ago. That is two times older than earlier scientific fungus finds.(多細胞真菌は、現在のキノコ、酵母菌およびカビを含む生物の大きなグループの祖先だ。

Until now, the oldest known fossil fungus, found in Scotland, was about 410 million years old.(これまでに知られていた最古の菌類の化石は、スコットランドで見つかった約4億1,000万年前のものだった。)

Fungi and animals developed together in a close relationship on Earth. The researchers believe that because of this, microscopic animals may have lived at the same time as the Ourasphaira fungus. But, so far, the earliest animal fossils date back to about 635 million years ago.(菌類と動物は地球上で密接に関係しながら共に進化してきた。

Researchers: AI System Greatly Improves Lung Cancer Predictions
May 26, 2019

the method also results in a high rate of false-positive or false-negative cancer diagnoses.(この方法はまた、高い割合の偽陽性または偽陰性のガン診断をもたらす)

The study reports the system was tested on 6,716 cases with known diagnoses, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute. The system’s overall success rate was 94.4 percent. When examining a CT scan for diagnosis, the deep-learning model performed equal to or better than six radiologists, the study found.

Google said in a statement, “We detected five percent more cancer cases while reducing false-positive exams by more than 11 percent compared to unassisted radiologists in our study.”(グーグルは声明の中で、「われわれの研究では、支援を受けていない放射線科医と比較して、偽陽性診断を11%以上減らしながら、ガンの症例を5%多く発見した」と述べている。)

“This is technically ‘4D' because it is not only looking at one CT scan, but two - the current and prior scan - over time.”(「これは技術的には「4D」です。

What Is the Perfect American Lawn?
May 26, 2019

The last Monday in May is Memorial Day in the United States. The holiday officially honors people who died in military service while the country was at war.(5月の最終月曜日は合衆国では戦没者追悼記念日になっている。

The end of May also marks the beginning of a less serious kind of war. It is one many living Americans fight each summer. It is a battle for - and about - the perfect lawn. That’s right, the lawn: the grass around most American houses.(5月の終わりはまた、それほど深刻ではない種類の戦争の始まりを告げる時でもある。

Virginia Scott Jenkins is an expert on Americans’ extreme interest in lawns. In fact, in her book on the issue, she calls it an “obsession.”(バージニア・スコット・ジェンキンスはアメリカ人の芝生への極端な関心についての専門家だ。

She explains that, in the minds of many Americans, the perfect lawn looks like a soft, green carpet.

“An orderly front lawn is supposed to be representative of an orderly household. Good neighbors have good front lawns, and good citizens have good front lawns.”(「整然とした前庭の芝生は、きちんとした家庭を代表すると考えられています。

2019 College Graduation Speeches Ask Students to Help Others
May 25, 2019

The 2019 commencement season, for example, has seen many popular writers, actors and singers speak on issues the graduates may face in the years to come. But few have gained as much attention as this year’s speaker at the Morehouse College graduation ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia.(例えば2019年の卒業式シーズンには、多くの人気作家、俳優、歌手が近い将来卒業生が直面する可能性のある問題について話しているのが見られた。

Morehouse’s 2019 commencement speaker was Robert F. Smith, founder of the investment company Vista Equity Partners. Earlier this year, Forbes magazine reported Smith to be the wealthiest African-American in the United States.(Morehouseの2019年の卒業式講演者は、投資会社Vista Equity Partnersの創設者であるRobert F. Smithだった。

On May 19, Smith made a surprising announcement during his speech to the nearly 400 Morehouse graduates in attendance. He would be paying off all of their student loan debt.(5月19日、スミスはスピーチ中に、出席している400人近いMorehouseの卒業生に対し驚くべき発表をした。

“On behalf of the eight generations of my family that have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus,” Smith said, followed by cheers from the crowd.(「この国に生きた私の家族8世代を代表して、君たちのバスに少しばかり燃料を注ぐつもりだ」とSmithは言い、その後に群衆から歓声が続いた。)

The estimated cost of Smith’s promise is about $40 million. This is in addition to the $1.5 million he donated to Morehouse in January.(Smithの約束の推定費用は約4,000万ドルになる。
