Dementia: A Growing Worldwide Health Problem
June 03, 2019

71275B9E

Aging is normal. But dementia is not a normal part of aging.(老化は正常だ。

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines dementia as an illness marked by a decline in a person’s ability to think, reason and understand “beyond what might be expected from normal aging.”(世界保健機関(WHO)は認知症を、「正常な老化から予想されるものを超えた」、考える、判断する、理解する能力の低下によって特徴づけられる病気だと定義している。)

It results from a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer disease or stroke. About 50 million people around the world have dementia.(それはアルツハイマー病や脳卒中など、脳に影響を与えるさまざまな病気やケガに起因するもので、世界中で約5000万人が認知症を患っている。)

WHO experts say that scientific evidence confirms that what is good for our hearts is also good for our brains. Having an active and healthy lifestyle is the best way to avoid getting dementia as we age.(WHOの専門家によれば、私たちの心に良いことは私たちの脳にも良いことが科学的な証拠によって裏付けられている。

・exercise regularly(定期的な運動)
・do not smoke(喫煙しない)
・do not drink harmful amounts of alcohol(有害な量のアルコールを飲まない)
・keep a healthy weight(健康的な体重を保つ)
・eat a healthy diet(健康的な食事を食べる)
・keep your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar at healthy levels(血圧、コレステロール、血糖値を健康なレベルに保つ)

But they warn against talking vitamin B or E pills, fish oil or other so-called “brain health” pills. They say there is “strong research showing they don’t work.”(しかし、彼らはビタミンBやEの錠剤、魚油やその他のいわゆる「脳に良い」錠剤を摂取しないよう注意を喚起している。

Ghana Struggles to End Illegal Gold Mines
June 03, 2019

Recently, a large amount of dirty waste water spilled over some of the forest’s vegetation. It came from a small gold mine that was operating without a government permit. Miners have a term for the waste water: slime.(最近、大量の汚染された廃水が森林の草木の上に溢れだした。

The government has worked to prevent illegal mining at small gold mines since 2017. The national water company had warned that chemicals released by galamsey could force Ghana to import all its drinking water in the near future.(政府は2017年以来、小規模な金鉱での違法採掘の防止に取り組んできた。

“Galamsey” is a term used for the country’s small, illegal gold mines. It comes from the expression “gather them and sell.”(「Galamsey」

Yet information released last month shows the rate of deforestation in Ghana increased by 60 percent in 2018. That is faster than any other part of the world. The country lost 1.13 percent of its primary forest last year.

About 1.1 million Ghanaians were estimated to work in small mines before the ban, which was lifted in December. Such mines are responsible for about 30 percent of the country's yearly mineral production.(禁止される前、およそ110万人のガーナ人が小規模鉱山で働いていると推定されていた。

World’s Costliest Medicine Is Gene Treatment Priced at $2 Million
June 02, 2019

U.S. officials have approved the costliest medicine in history - a $2.1-million gene therapy that treats a rare childhood disease.(合衆国当局は歴史上最も高価な薬を承認した。

Gene therapy is a medical treatment in which healthy genetic material is introduced into cells to replace abnormal genes.(遺伝子治療とは、正常な遺伝物質を細胞に導入して異常な遺伝子と置き換える治療法のことだ。)

The new gene therapy targets a disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which severely weakens a child’s muscles. The treatment, called Zolgensma, was developed by Swiss drugmaker Novartis.(この新しい遺伝子治療が対象としているのは脊髄性筋萎縮症(SMA)と呼ばれる病気で、子供の筋肉を著しく弱める疾患だ。

Over time, SMA can make it impossible for the child to move, swallow or breathe. The disease affects about 1 in 10,000 births. In 90 percent of cases, the condition causes death or the need for permanent breathing assistance by age two.(時間の経過とともに、SMAは子供が動いたり、飲み込んだり、呼吸することを不可能にする。

While it is too early to know how long the effectiveness of the treatment will last, some doctors have hope that it could last a lifetime.(この治療法の有効性がどれくらい続くかを判断するのは時期尚早だが、それが一生続くことを期待している医師もいる。)

He noted that some of those treated as babies are now 4 or 5 years old with no signs of the disease.(赤ちゃんの頃に治療された人々の何人かは現在4歳から5歳であり、病気の徴候のないと彼は述べている。)

Finland Will Need to Import Biomass to Keep Warm
June 02, 2019

EE014E2E

Finland is the most heavily forested country in Europe.

Biomass is fuel developed from organic materials. It includes forest, parts of trees as well as plant and animal waste. Yet the northern European nation may soon be unable to meet an expected 70% rise in demand for biomass fuel once it stops using coal.(バイオマスとは有機材料から生み出された燃料だ。

Earlier this year, Finland approved a measure to ban the use of coal in energy production by May 2029. Power companies will now have to find other ways to keep Finns warm. Coal currently makes up about 20% of the energy used for heating homes.(今年初めにフィンランドは、エネルギー生産における石炭の使用を2029年5月までに禁止する法案を承認した。

Forests cover 75% of Finland’s land. But the number of trees harvested is limited by law, with most of the wood saved for the pulp industry. The government would be unable to add much more supply for energy use.(フィンランドの土地の75%は森林に覆われている。

Huttunen added that moving biomass from northern Finland was also a limitation.

Such imports could come from other countries around the Baltic Sea, including Sweden, Estonia and Russia.(このような輸入品は、スウェーデン、エストニア、ロシアを含むバルト海周辺の他の国々からのものだ。)

Recently, the United States Social Security Administration released a list of the most popular U.S. baby names in 2018.(先日、米国社会保障局は2018年に合衆国で最も人気のあった赤ちゃんの名前のリストを発表した。)

“Emma” was the most popular name in states on the U.S. West Coast, while “Liam” was the top choice in the Midwest. But in the southeastern part of the country, parents were more likely to name a boy “William,” while “Ava” was a popular name for girls.(“Emma”がアメリカ西海岸の諸州で最も人気のある名前だった。

The Social Security Administration said that “Liam” has been at the top of the list for boys nationwide in each of the past two years. “Emma” was the most popular name for girls for the fifth year.(社会保障局によれば、全国では“Liam”が過去2年間共に男の子のリストの第一位だった。

For example, the name “Arya,” a character on the TV show "Game of Thrones," was the 119th most popular girls’ name on the new list.

Berger found that names starting with “K” became more popular after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. Americans heard the name of the storm in the news so often that its sound became more familiar and appealing.(Bergerは、2005年にハリケーン・カトリーナがルイジアナ州ニューオーリンズを襲った後には、“K”から始まる名前が人気になったことを見出した。

A town in Pakistan is struggling to deal with patients infected with HIV, the virus that can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, known as AIDS.(パキスタンのある町が、HIVに感染した患者への対処に追われている。

Nearly 700 HIV cases have been reported in the town of Ratodero, in Sindh Province, since April. Most of the patients are children.(4月以降、シンド州のラトデロ市で700件近いHIV感染者が報告されている。

“For me it was impossible to imagine,” said Nazeer, recalling the day a doctor said his 16 month-old girl had tested positive for HIV.(「私には想像もできませんでした」と、彼の生後16か月の娘が検査の結果HIV陽性だったと医師が言った日を思い出して、Nazeerは述べた。)

“I told him ‘are you joking with me, how can she have HIV?,’” he said.

Health officials say 681 people have tested positive for HIV in the town since April 25. Of that number, 537 are children.(保健当局によれば、この町で4月25日以降、検査の結果681人がHIV陽性だった。

About 60% of Ratodero patients were infected by reused medical instruments, such as needles and syringes, or through donated blood, says Doctor Sikander Memon. He is head of the province’s AIDS control program.(ラトデロの患者の約60%が針や注射器といった医療器具の再利用によってか、もしくは献血を通して感染している、とDoctor Sikander Memonは述べている。

Police and doctors carried out an investigation. They found that 123 HIV patients had been treated by the same doctor before they were infected.(警察と医師が捜査を行い、123人のHIV患者が感染前に同じ医者による治療を受けていたことを発見した。)

Dr. Muzaffar Ghanghro was arrested on April 30 and has been charged with unintentional murder, police said.(Dr. Muzaffar Ghanghro
