Director of MIT’s Media Lab Resigns over Money Ties
September 10, 2019

The president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, has ordered an independent investigation into financing of MIT’s Media Lab. The order comes after the head of the laboratory resigned over its ties to Epstein.(MITことマサチューセッツ工科大学の学長は、MITメディアラボの資金調達に関する独自調査を命じた。

The issue of questionable donations has sent shockwaves through the world of education. It shows the problems educators face as they decide whether to accept money from people accused of wrongdoing.(疑わしい寄付金の問題は、教育界中に衝撃を与えた。

Epstein was arrested in July on federal sex-trafficking charges. His arrest brought new attention to old claims that he had sexually abused women and girls. He killed himself in jail last month while awaiting his trial.(エプスタインは7月、連邦政府の性的人身売買容疑で逮捕された。

For three years, Joi Ito served as director of the MIT Media Lab. He resigned from both the lab and from his position as a professor, the school’s president announced on Saturday.(伊藤穰一はMITメディアラボの所長を3年間務めていた。

The resignation came a day after The New Yorker reported that the media lab had a bigger fundraising relationship with Epstein than it had admitted earlier. The magazine also said the media lab tried to cover up the nature of the relationship.(この辞任は、メディアラボとエプスタインの資金調達の関係はこれまで認めていたよりも大きいとThe New Yorker誌が報じた翌日に行われた。

MIT listed Epstein as “disqualified’ in its donor database. However, the Media Lab continued taking gifts from him and marked his donations as anonymous, The New Yorker reported.(MITは、寄贈者のデータベースにエプスタインを「不適格」と記載した。

Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Resigns as Company Chief
September 10, 2019

Jack Ma has resigned as chairman of Alibaba Group, the world's biggest e-commerce business.(ジャック・マーは、世界最大の電子商取引企業であるアリババグループの会長を辞任した。)

Ma is one of China's wealthiest and best-known business leaders. He stepped down as Alibaba’s chief on his 55th birthday. The move was part of a process announced a year ago.(マーは中国で最も裕福で最も有名なビジネスリーダーの1人だ。

Ma, a former English teacher, founded Alibaba in 1999 to connect Chinese exporters to retail businesses in North America.(元英語教師のマーは、中国の輸出業者を北米の小売事業者と結び付けるため、1999年にアリババを設立した。)

The total amount of goods sold throughout Alibaba's e-commerce businesses rose 25 percent last year to $853 billion. By comparison, the biggest U.S. e-commerce company, Amazon.com Inc., reported total sales of $277 billion.(アリババの電子商取引事業全体で販売された商品の総額は、昨年25%増加して8,530億ドルになった。

Alibaba was established at a time when few Chinese were active online. As internet use spread, the company expanded into consumer-centered retailing and services. Few Chinese used credit cards, so Alibaba created the Alipay online payments system.(アリババが設立されたのは、オンラインで活動する中国人がほとんどいない時だった。

The Hurun Report, which reports on wealth in China, estimates Ma's financial worth as $38 billion.(中国の富について報告しているHurun Reportは、マーの資産価値を380億ドルと推定している。)

Alibaba’s new chairman is Daniel Zhang, who has been with the company for 12 years.(アリババの新しい会長はダニエル・チャンで、彼は同社に12年在籍している。)

Jack Ma(ジャック・マー)氏は米国時間9月9日、Alibaba(アリババ)の会長を辞任し、現在のCEOであるDaniel Zhang(ダニエル・チャン)氏にその役割を譲った。

Popular American Stores Now Selling Used Clothing
September 08, 2019

More and more Americans are buying used clothes from second-hand stores. Now, some major department stores have started selling old clothes, too.(リサイクルショップで古着を買うアメリカ人はますます増加している。

Recently, J.C. Penney and Macy’s started selling used clothing from ThredUP, an online thrift store.(最近、J.C.

These and other recent moves show how businesses can no longer ignore the growing preference of buying and selling old clothes. Shoppers want to pay less for clothes. And they would rather see their old clothes worn again than thrown away.(こうした動きや最近のその他の動きは、古着の売買を好むことの高まりを、いかに企業がもはや無視できないかを示している。

Observers say selling old clothes is a way to bring customers back to the stores - especially young shoppers. But some people also fear that it could hurt businesses.(観測筋によれば、古着を売ることは顧客、特に若い買い物客を店舗を呼び戻す方法だ。

Although the clothes resale business is still small, it is quickly growing.(衣料品の再販売事業はまだ規模が小さいが、急速に成長している。)

A report for ThredUp predicts that sales of second-hand goods will grow from $24 billion last year to $51 billion by 2023. Another study by the Boston Consulting Group found that one-third of shoppers sold unwanted clothes in order to buy new ones.(ThredUpについての報告書によると、中古品の売上は、昨年の240億ドルから2023年までに510億ドルに増加すると予測されている。

she has not shopped at places like J.C. Penney or Macy’s for many years. And, she does not expect that to change.(J.C.

East Timor Marks 20 Years since Independence Vote
September 08, 2019

East Timor is marking the 20th anniversary of a special referendum that ended 24 years of Indonesian rule and led to its independence.(東ティモールは特別住民投票20周年を祝っている。

Many East Timorese are remembering how the vote fueled violence by pro-Indonesia militias. They blame the militias for 1,500 deaths and pushing another 500,000 people out of their homes.(東チモール人の多くは、投票が親インドネシア民兵による暴力をどのように燃え上がらせたかを覚えている。

The country’s capital, the city of Dili, has been preparing for the arrival of foreign diplomats for anniversary celebrations that will last until the end of September.(この国の首都ディリ市は、9月末まで続く20周年のお祝いのために来る外国からの使節の到着に備えている。)

United Nations peacekeeping troops arrived in East Timor three weeks after the August 30, 1999 vote and ended the unrest. Independence followed on May 20, 2002. Voters elected resistance leader Xanana Gusmao as the country’s first president.(国連平和維持部隊は1999年8月30日の投票の3週間後に東ティモールに到着し、混乱を終息させた。

Since then, East Timor has struggled to develop its democracy and build an economy. Conflict and ongoing internal fighting have limited its ability to interest foreign investors.(それ以来、東ティモールは民主主義の発展と経済の構築に苦しんできた。

In 2006, the UN sent security forces to restore order after 155,000 people fled their homes to escape fighting between competing groups. Then, in early 2008, President Jose Ramos-Horta was critically wounded in an assassination attempt.(2006年、国連は治安部隊を派遣した。

The presence of peacekeeping forces briefly helped East Timor’s economy. But since their deployment ended in 2012, the gross domestic product has fallen to less than $3 billion. Other measures of the economy are sketchy. Even the country’s leadership questions the official unemployment rate of 3.5%.(平和維持軍の駐留は、東ティモールの経済を一時的に助けた。

Under a settlement with Australia, East Timor will get a bigger share of the Greater Sunrise oil and gas fields.(オーストラリアとの和解に基づき、東ティモールはグレーターサンライズの油田とガス田で大きなシェアを獲得する見通しだ。)

Rising Sea Levels Threaten Egypt’s Alexandria
September 07, 2019

Rising sea levels are threatening parts of the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria.(上昇する海面は、エジプトの沿岸都市アレキサンドリアの一部を脅かしている。)

Alexandria is Egypt’s second largest city, with more than 5 million people. It is also an important port and home to about 40 percent of Egypt’s industrial activity. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and sits next to a lake.(アレクサンドリアは、エジプトで2番目に大きな都市で、人口は500万人以上。

Officials have built concrete barriers in the sea in an effort to reduce the force of waves. A severe storm in 2015 flooded large parts of the city. At least six people were killed in the flooding, which also caused the collapse of many homes.(当局は、波の力を弱めるために海にコンクリートの堤を建設してきた。

Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said the sea level rose by an average of 1.8 millimeters each year until 1993. Over the next 20 years, it rose by 2.1 millimeters a year. Since 2012, however, the rate became 3.2 millimeters each year.(エジプトの水資源灌漑省によれば、海水面の上昇は1993年までは毎年平均1.8ミリメートルだった。

A 2018 research study predicted that up to 734 square kilometers of the Nile Delta could be under water by 2050. People living in low-lying areas are already experiencing problems.(2018年の調査研究では、ナイル川デルタ地帯で最大734平方キロメートルが2050年までに水没する可能性があると予測されている。

Some of the city’s archaeological treasures are also threatened. Among them is the citadel of Qaitbay, a fortress built in the Middle Ages on the ruins of the ancient Pharos lighthouse in the central harbor.(市の考古学的に貴重な物のいくつかも脅かされている。

In the Face of Death, A Party
September 07, 2019

On the day he chose to die, Robert Fuller invited his friends to a party at his house.(彼が死ぬことを選んだその日、ロバート・フラーは友人たちを自宅でのパーティーに招待した。)

Fuller, age 75, was living at a home for older adults in the American state of Washington. That state permits people to choose to end their lives under some conditions. Fuller is one of about 1,200 people in Washington to use the law over the last 10 years.(75歳のフラーは、アメリカのワシントン州にある高齢者向け施設に住んでいた。

Fuller invited a reporter from the Associated Press to the party because he said he wanted to show people how “aid in dying” laws work. By the end of the year, nine U.S. states will have such laws.(フラーはAP通信の記者をパーティーに招待した。

In 2018, doctors found a serious cancer in Fuller’s mouth. (2018

Fuller had learned about Washington’s “aid in dying” law from a neighbor. The measure requires two doctors to legally declare that a patient has less than six months to live. Also, the person must be in good mental health. And he or she must publicly ask for the life-ending drugs three times.(フラーは、ワシントン州の「死の援助」法のことを隣人から知った。

Others who used the law said they did not want to lose their independence as a result of severe sickness. Some said they did not want to cause problems for their families and friends. And some said they did not want to stop enjoying life.(この法律を使用した他の人々は、重病の結果として自立を失いたくないと述べていた。

Writer Wesley J. Smith says seriously sick people may be too quick to choose to end their lives. If they waited, he says, new treatments might be developed.(作家のウェズリー・J・スミスは、重い病にかかっている人は自分の人生を終わらせることを選択するのが早すぎるかもしれないと言っている。
