US Girls Take Top Science Prizes
November 12, 2019

When it comes to U.S. middle school science and engineering, girls rule. Girls took the top five prizes at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS, a competition for middle school students across the country.(合衆国の中学校の科学と工学に関して言えば、女子生徒たちがこれを支配している。

In first place was 14 year old Alaina Gassler of West Grove, Pennsylvania. She designed a system to make driving safer by reducing blind spots - the areas that drivers cannot see outside their vehicle. Gassler developed the technology while in eighth grade.(1位はペンシルベニア州ウェストグローブに住む14歳のAlaina Gasslerだ。

The Broadcom MASTERS competition is a project of the Society for Science & the Public. The term MASTERS is short for Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars. The program was set up to motivate young people to attend college and pursue careers in STEM fields.(Broadcom MASTERSコンテストは、Society for the Science&the Publicが行っている事業で、MASTERSという用語は、「期待の新星のための数学、応用科学、技術、工学」を略したものだ。

Gassler’s system helps drivers see “through” the A-frame pillar - the part of the vehicle, in the front, that joins the top and front window. The A-frame pillar is important for safety, and cannot be removed. Gassler used a camera to help drivers look “through” the structure to see what is blocked. The camera sends video to a device that shows images on the other side of the pillar. The driver then can “see” what's in the blind spot.(Gasslerのシステムは、運転手がAピラーを「透かして」見るのを支援するものだ。

The young inventor won a $25,000 prize for her invention. She told Popular Mechanics she can make improvements on her device with that money. Gassler said she wants to improve the picture - making it easy to see in any weather, or time of day. She also told the magazine she hopes to sell her idea.(若き発明家はその発明に対して2万5,000ドルの賞金を獲得した。

Dead for 64 Years, James Dean to Star in New Film
November 12, 2019

American actor James Dean has been dead for 64 years. The star of Rebel Without a Cause died at the age of 25 in September 1955. Yet, he will star in a new movie about the Vietnam War thanks to digital technology.(アメリカの俳優、ジェームス・ディーンが亡くなって64年になる。

The makers of the movie “Finding Jack” announced this month that they plan to use computer-generated images of James Dean in the film. The images will come from old film clips and pictures of Dean. Another actor is to provide the voice.(映画「Finding Jack」の製作者は、映画でジェームス・ディーンのコンピューター生成画像を使用する計画だと今月発表した。

Other movies have had digitally created performances by dead actors, but most of them had already played parts in the film, like Peter Cushing. He first appeared in the very first Star Wars film. Cushing died in 1994. Yet images of him were digitally recreated for the 2016 Star Wars film Rogue One.(他の映画で亡くなった俳優によるデジタル処理で作成された演技が行われているが、そのほとんどは映画の中に既に演じられた部分がある。

The idea that one of the movies’ most beloved former stars would be recreated digitally for a new film has been met with criticism. Captain America actor Chris Evans called the plans to use Dean’s image in the film disrespectful and wrongheaded.(映画界で最も愛されたかつてのスターの一人が新しい映画のためにデジタル処理で再現されるという考えは批判を浴びている。

“Maybe we can get a computer to paint us a new Picasso. Or write a couple new John Lennon tunes,” said Evans on Twitter.(「もしかしたら我々はコンピュータにピカソの新作を描かせることができるかもしれない。

Afghan President: Kidnapped Professors to Be Exchanged for Taliban Leaders
November 12, 2019

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced Tuesday that the Taliban will release two foreign professors in return for the government’s release of three Taliban leaders.(アフガニスタンのアシュラフ・ガニ大統領は火曜日、政府が3人のタリバン指導者を釈放することと引き換えに、タリバンが2人の外国人教授を解放すると発表した。)

American Kevin King and Australian Timothy John Weeks were kidnapped in Kabul in August of 2016. They were seized near the American University of Afghanistan where they had been teaching.(アメリカ人のKevin Kingとオーストラリア人のTimothy John Weeksは、2016年8月にカブールで誘拐された。

In January 2017, the Taliban released a video in which the two professors asked their families to pressure the United States to negotiate with the Taliban and to exchange prisoners for them.(2017年1月、タリバンはビデオを公開した。

President Ghani said that they were being released “conditionally in exchange” for the two professors. Ghani said his government made the decision after discussion with international partners, especially the United States. He said it was a hard decision, but that the exchange helps the “talks with the Taliban and for reaching peace and stability.”(ガニ大統領は、幹部らが釈放されるのは、2人の教授と「条件付きでの引き換え」だと述べている。

He said his government also received reports that the health of the Western hostages was failing.(彼は、西洋人の人質の健康状態が悪化しているという報告も政府は受けていると述べている。)

Doctors Report First US Tests of Gene Editing for Cancer
November 11, 2019

Doctors have reported on the first attempts in the United States to use gene editing to help patients fight cancer.(医師らは、患者が癌と闘うのを助けるために遺伝子編集を利用する合衆国で初の試みについて発表した。)

The doctors say one form of gene editing appeared to be safe when tested in three patients. But it is not yet known what long-term effects the method will have on cancer treatment or patient survival rates.(医師らは、3人の患者でテストしたところ、遺伝子編集の1つの形式は安全であるように思われたと述べている。

A gene editing tool called CRISPR/Cas9 was used in the tests, which were recently reported in a medical study. The method was discovered in recent years as a way to change the genetic material that make up a person’s DNA.(CRISPR/Cas9と呼ばれる遺伝子編集手法がテストで使用され、そのことが先日、医学論文で発表された。

Two of the patients suffer from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, and the third has sarcoma, cancer that forms in connective or soft tissue. All had failed with repeated traditional cancer treatments.(患者のうち2人は多発性骨髄腫、すなわち血液がんの一つに罹患しており、3人目の患者は肉腫、すなわち結合組織や軟部組織に生じる癌を患っている。

After two to three months, one patient’s cancer continued to worsen, while the condition of another patient was unchanged. The third patient was treated too recently to effectively measure her progress. The researchers plan to expand the experimental treatment to 15 more patients.(2~3か月経過した時点で、患者の一人は癌が悪化し続けたが、もう一人の患者の病状は変化しなかった。

Stadtmauer said that since the gene editing treatment is so new, it is not clear how soon major anti-cancer effects will be seen. Patients must be followed further and more tests will be needed, he said.(Stadtmauerによれば、遺伝子編集治療法は非常に新しいものであるため、大きな抗癌効果がいつになれば確認できるかは明らかではない。

NASA’s Voyager 2 Discovers New Details About Interstellar Space
November 10, 2019

About one year ago, the U.S. space agency NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft left our solar system.

NASA says Voyager 2’s mission led to new discoveries about the border that divides our solar system from interstellar space. “Interstellar” means “between stars.” But scientists define interstellar space as the place where the sun's continual flow of material and magnetic field stop affecting its surroundings.(NASAは、ボイジャー2号のミッションが、太陽系と星間空間とを分ける境界についての新たな発見につながったと述べている。

Project researchers say Voyager 2’s scientific instruments discovered unexpected differences in the density of plasma, a collection of charged particles existing in the solar system.(プロジェクト研究者によると、ボイジャー2号の科学機器は、太陽系内に存在する荷電粒子の集まりであるプラズマの密度に予想外の差異を発見した。)

NASA also says the new research reports confirmed that both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 appear to be in a transitional area just beyond the heliosphere. The heliosphere is a protective bubble that protects our solar system. It is created by solar wind formed from charged particles. The border of the solar system - the place where solar wind ends and interstellar space begins - is called the heliopause.(NASAによればまた、新たな研究報告書で、ボイジャー1号とボイジャー2号の両方が太陽圏をわずかに越えた過渡的宙域に位置していると考えられることが確認されている。

The team reported that data from Voyager 2 suggests that the heliopause appears to be much thinner than expected.(チームの報告によれば、ボイジャー2号から来たデータは、ヘリオポーズが予想よりもはるかに薄いらしいことを示唆している。)

Researchers said Voyager 2 also confirmed the existence of a “magnetic barrier” at the outer edge of the heliosphere that had been predicted by theory and observed by Voyager 1.(研究者らによれば、ボイジャー2号は太陽圏外縁部の「磁気障壁」の存在も確認している。

Lebanon a ‘Beautiful Idea' in Need of a Remake, Say Protestors
November 10, 2019

The city of Beirut in Lebanon appears to be a picture of elegance and success. It has French stores selling costly goods, pricey hotels and its streets are filled with imported cars. But it is also a nation struggling with inequality, collapsing public services and high unemployment.(レバノンの都市ベイルートは、優雅さと成功を絵に描いた存在のようだ。

Three weeks of anti-government protests have left the country shaken and have resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri.(3

Salem called the protests a revolution because they have brought hundreds of thousands of Lebanese people into the streets. But, she said, the protests will be a failure unless the ruling elite are removed from power completely.(Salemは抗議運動を革命と呼んだ。

The country’s 15-year-old civil war ended in 1990, but the names of those who run the country have not really changed, she said. The protestors do not believe they can build a stronger economy or a better future.(同国の15年にわたる内戦は1990年に終結したが、この国を動かしている人々の名前は実際には変わらなかった。

The World Inequality Database, a research group, considers Lebanon one of the most unequal countries in the world. The richest one percent of its people account for almost 25 percent of the national income while the poorest account for 10 percent.(調査団体の世界不平等データベースは、レバノンを世界で最も不公平な国の一つと見なしている。

Beirut stores are filled with goods that can only be bought by the wealthy. Yet the economy is not growing, debt is at 150 percent of gross domestic product and unemployment among people who are under age 35 is nearing 40 percent.(ベイルートの店舗は、裕福な人だけが購入できる商品でいっぱいだ。
