WHO’s Advice to Protect Yourself from Coronavirus
March 03, 2020

The World Health Organization, or WHO, has the following advice to protect yourself from being infected with the coronavirus or other flu-like diseases.(世界保健機関(WHO)は、コロナウイルスやその他のインフルエンザ様疾患に感染することから身を守るために、以下のアドバイスを行っている。)

Wash your hands frequently(頻繁に手を洗いましょう)

Clean your hands often and carefully with an alcohol-based hand cleaner or wash them with soap and water. Washing your hands kills viruses that may be on your hands.(アルコールを主成分とするハンドクリーナーで頻繁かつ丁寧に手を洗浄するか、もしくは石鹸と水で洗ってください。

Maintain social distancing(社会的距離を保ちましょう)

Stay at least one meter away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing. When someone coughs or sneezes, they release small drops of liquid from their nose or mouth which may contain the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the liquid, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.(咳やくしゃみをしている人から少なくとも1メートル離れてください。

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth(目、鼻、口に触れないようにしましょう)

Your hands touch many surfaces where viruses can survive up to nine days. Once contaminated, hands can carry the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.(手はあちこちの表面に触れますが、そこでウイルスは最大9日間生き残ることができます。

Practice respiratory hygiene(呼吸器の衛生習慣を実践しましょう)

Make sure that you, and the people around you, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or facial tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then throw away the used tissue immediately.(あなたも周囲の人も、咳やくしゃみをするときは自身の口と鼻を肘やティッシュペーパーで忘れずに覆ってください。

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early(発熱、咳、呼吸困難がある場合は、早めに病院にかかってください)

Stay home if you feel unwell, even with mild signs of infection such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover.(体長が良くない時は、たとえそれが頭痛やわずかな鼻水といった感染の軽度の兆候であっても、回復するまでは家にいてください。)

OECD Study: World Economy May Shrink Because of Coronavirus
March 02, 2020

A new report says the spreading coronavirus could make the world economy shrink during the first three months of 2020. If confirmed, it would be the first quarterly drop in economic activity since the international financial crisis more than 10 years ago.(新たな報告書によれば、コロナウイルスの蔓延により、2020年の最初の3か月で世界経済が縮小する可能性がある。

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released a special report on the effect of the virus Monday. The Paris-based OECD advises developed economies on policy.(経済協力開発機構(OECD)は、月曜日にウイルスの影響に関する特別報告書を発表した。

The report said the world economy is still expected to grow both this year and next year. But the OECD lowered its estimate for international growth in 2020 by half a percentage point, to 2.4 percent. It said the growth rate could go as low as 1.5 percent if the virus lasts long and spreads widely.(報告書によると、世界経済はそれでも今年・来年共に成長すると予想されている。

The new coronavirus has caused more than 3,000 deaths worldwide. In addition to the “human suffering” from the virus, the report said that “economic prospects remain…very uncertain.”(新型コロナウイルスは世界全体で3,000人以上の死者を出した。

The last time the world economy shrank on a quarter-on-quarter basis was at the end of 2008. At that time, a shock to financial businesses caused problems for companies around the world. Many people lost their jobs. The world economy continued to shrink through 2009.(前回、世界経済が四半期ベースで縮小したのは2008年末だ。

US Aims to Begin Withdrawal from Afghanistan within 10 Days
March 02, 2020

The United States military has announced plans to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, adding it is unlikely that violence there will completely disappear.(米軍はアフガニスタンから部隊を撤退させる計画を発表し、この地での暴力が完全になくなることは可能性が低いと付け加えた。)

U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper spoke Monday about an agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Afghanistan. He told reporters that under the deal, U.S. forces will begin withdrawing from the country within 10 days.(合衆国国防長官マーク・エスパーは、合衆国とアフガニスタンのタリバンとの間の合意について月曜日に語った。

U.S. and Taliban representatives signed the deal on Saturday in Doha, Qatar. It is aimed at starting negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government and ending 18 years of fighting.(合衆国とタリバンの代表者は、土曜日にカタールのドーハで協定に署名した。

Under the deal, the United States agreed to reduce the number of its troops in the country to 8,600 from 13,000 within 135 days. It also promised to work with U.S. allies to reduce their troop numbers over that period.(この協定で、合衆国はアフガニスタン国内の部隊の人数を135日以内に13,000人から8,600人に減らすことに同意した。

The United States and the Taliban promised to work toward the release of military combat and political prisoners as a measure to build confidence. The agreement calls for about 5,000 Taliban prisoners to be released in exchange for up to 1,000 Afghan government captives by March 10.(合衆国とタリバンは信頼を築く手段として、戦闘兵と政治犯の釈放に向けて取り組むことを約束した。

Lack of Snow in Japan Changes Olympic Cooling Plans
March 02, 2020

Japan has been collecting snow this winter to be used to help cool areas during this year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo. But lower-than-usual snowfall this year has forced officials to rethink the effort.(日本では、東京で行われる今夏のオリンピックの期間中、地区の冷房を支援するのに使われる雪を、この冬に集めていた。

Some of the work has taken place in the mountain city of Minami-Uonuma, in Niigata prefecture north of Tokyo. Workers have been trying to collect and store snow to bring by train to areas where Olympic soccer and basketball events will be held.(作業の一部は、東京の北方、新潟県にある山間の市、南魚沼で行わていた。

The snow is supposed to be used to cool buildings. Organizers also plan to give out the snow to Olympic visitors as they arrive for events. Summer temperatures around Tokyo often rise to at least 40 degrees Celsius. Organizers are also planning to use misting machines and water stations to keep Olympic attendees cool.(雪は建物を冷やすために使用されることになっている。

The use of snow to cool structures is not new in Japan and some other countries. In Norway, for example, the country’s airport in Oslo uses snow collected and stored during the winter to cool buildings in the summer.(建造物を冷却するために雪を使用することは、日本や他のいくつかの国では目新しくない。

Usually, the mountains in Niigata receive some of the heaviest snow levels in Japan. But this year, snow amounts dropped sharply. They could end up being the lowest since recordkeeping began in 1981. The information on snow levels came from Japan’s Meteorological Agency.(通常、新潟の山々には日本で有数の豪雪が降る。

Scientists Discover Earth’s Oldest Green Plant Fossil in China
March 01, 2020

Scientists have discovered what may be the oldest fossils of a green plant ever found.(科学者は、これまでに見つかった緑色植物の化石で最も古いかもしれないものを発見した。)

The fossils were found in rocks from northern China. The plant is thought to be a piece of seaweed that grew on Earth’s seafloor about 1 billion years ago. That would make this seaweed an ancestor of all green plants alive today.(化石は中国北部の岩石から発見された。

Researchers in the United States reported on the discovery in the publication Nature Ecology & Evolution. The researchers are with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.(合衆国の研究者が、Nature Ecology&Evolution誌でこの発見について発表している。

The seaweed is a form of green algae called Proterocladus antiquus. It was very small, about the size of a single piece of rice. Researchers say the plant was connected to the seafloor with a root-like structure. At the time, the plant was one of the largest life forms in the sea, which contained mostly bacteria and other microorganisms.(この海藻は、Proterocladus antiquusと呼ばれる緑藻類の一種で、非常に小さくて米の一粒程度の大きさだ。

The researchers say Proterocladus was able to perform photosynthesis, taking energy from the sun to produce life-supporting carbon and oxygen. They believe the plant also provided food and shelter for many different kinds of sea life.(研究者によれば、Proterocladusは光合成を行うことが出来た。
