‘Made in Vietnam’ Goods Reach Record Popularity in US Market
March 31, 2020

Products from Vietnam have become more popular in the United States than ever before.(ベトナム製品の合衆国での人気はこれまで以上に高まっている。)

U.S. imports from the Southeast Asian nation increased 36 percent last year to $67 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. This represents the highest increase in a single year since 2003.(合衆国の東南アジア諸国からの輸入は昨年36%増加して670億ドルだったと米国国勢調査局が発表した。

Vietnam is a major supplier of electronic products, furniture, clothing, footwear, and fish to the United States. It also is a major exporter of coffee, rice, and other foods.(ベトナムは、合衆国に対する電子製品、家具、衣類、履物、および魚の主要な供給国だ。

Michael Ryan is the director of economics at IHS Markit Economics, an investment research service. He told VOA the latest increase shows Vietnam is making a “massive reorientation” in trade toward the U.S. market.(Michael Ryanは、投資調査会社であるIHS Markit Economicsの経済部長だ。

“The United States has become far and away the most important driver of Vietnam’s export engine, accounting for two-thirds of Vietnam’s total export growth in 2019,” Ryan said.(「合衆国はベトナムの輸出エンジンにとって圧倒的に最も重要な推進力となっており、2019年のベトナムの輸出成長全体の3分の2を占めています」とRyanは話している。)

Many businesses have been moving to Vietnam to reduce their dependence on China, where it has become more costly or harder to do business for several reasons. These include the trade war between the U.S. and China, higher operating costs and the spread of the new coronavirus.(多くの企業が中国への依存を減らすためにベトナムに移転している。

Yemen Experts Do Not See End to Conflict
March 31, 2020

Five years of civil war has turned Yemen -- the poorest Arab nation on the Arabian Peninsula -- into the world's worst humanitarian crisis. An estimated 100,000 people have been killed during the conflict.(5年間の内戦によってイエメン、即ちアラビア半島で最も貧しいアラブ国家は、世界で最悪の人道危機に陥った。

Yemen is home to 24 million people. About 80 percent of the population depends on food and humanitarian aid to survive.(イエメンには2,400万人が住んでいる。

Yemen's warring groups have welcomed a United Nations call for an immediate end to the conflict. But Middle East experts believe that such calls will not stop the fighting.(イエメンの戦闘グループは、紛争の即時終結を求める国連の要請を歓迎している。

Yemen expert Helen Lackner says the conflict appears to have no end. She told VOA, "These policymakers, as far as the Yemenis are concerned, are actively promoting the fighting…they don't care one bit about the millions who are suffering."(イエメンの専門家であるHelen Lacknerは、紛争には終わりがないようだと話している。

Lackner added that at the end of 2019, the fighting appeared to be slowing. But two major agreements failed to move forward. The United Nations-supported Stockholm agreement was supposed to end the coalition offensive on the port of Hodeida. The Riyadh agreement was to solve the crisis between Hadi's government and southern separatists supported by the United Arab Emirates.(Lacknerは、2019年末には戦闘が鈍化しているようだと付け加えた。

Who Will Receive the Needed Treatment for Coronavirus?
March 30, 2020

The disease caused by the new coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has now infected nearly 770,000 people. More than 36,000 people have died from the disease.(新型コロナウイルスによって引き起こされる病気、COVID-19は現在77万人近くに感染しており、3万6,000人以上がこの病気で亡くなった。)

A U.S. Navy hospital ship arrived in New York City while the city turned Central Park and other buildings into field hospitals to add spaces. Air Force planes flew patients from France and Italy to Germany and Switzerland to free up intensive care for coronavirus patients on life-support.(米海軍の病院船がニューヨーク市に到着した。

A nursing home official told The Associated Press that sick patients in Spain are dying because they are unable to get into overcrowded hospitals. Healthcare workers expect hospitals will not have enough ventilators -- machines that help patients breathe -- for coronavirus patients needing such treatment.(老人ホームの担当者はAP通信に対し、スペインの患者は過密状態の病院に入れないために死に瀕していると話している。

For example, New York state’s health department guideline excludes some seriously ill people from receiving ventilators in major emergencies. The guideline also says that age may be considered when deciding which patients would be given a ventilator.(たとえばニューヨーク州保健局のガイドラインでは、重大な緊急事態においては、重篤な患者を人工呼吸器の使用から除外している。

This week, however, medical experts in Germany said age alone should not be a deciding factor in treatment for COVID-19 patients.(しかし今週、ドイツの医療専門家は、年齢だけがCOVID-19患者の治療の決定的要因であってはならないと述べた。)

Coronavirus Provides Unexpected Help for Kenyan Fishermen
March 30, 2020

The spread of the new coronavirus has unexpectedly helped fishermen in Kenya.(新型コロナウイルスの蔓延は、思いがけずケニアの漁師たちを助けている。)

More Kenyans are now buying freshly caught fish from Lake Victoria instead of frozen fish imported from China.(中国から輸入した冷凍魚ではなく、ビクトリア湖でとれたての魚を買うケニア人が増えているのだ。)

Kenya bought $23.2 million worth of frozen fish from China in 2018. The International Trade Center reports that almost all of Kenya’s fish imports came from China. Kenyan fishermen have long noted that the low-cost imports were harming the country’s fishing industry.(ケニアは2018年には中国から2,320万ドル相当の冷凍魚を購入した。

But the coronavirus pandemic has slowed Chinese imports. In Kenya, many buyers have now turned to local fish. However, Kenya will soon face shortages unless imports from China are re-started. China produces just over one third of what people in Kenya eat.(しかし、コロナウイルスの大流行により中国からの輸入は鈍化している。

A month ago, one kilogram of Nile perch cost 250 shillings or about $2.50. Now, the price is up to $3.50.(1ヶ月前、1キログラムのナイルパーチの価格は250シリング、または約2.50ドルだった。

Fish trader Mary Didi usually buys from Chinese suppliers but now buys from Misodhi.(魚商人のMary Didiは、通常は中国の業者から購入しているが、今はMisodhiから買っている。)

Robots Replace Human Workers in Eastern Europe
March 29, 2020

Istman Simon’s factory in western Hungary produces more than one million plastic parts every day. But on a busy morning in one of its large production areas, there is only the sound of machines.(ハンガリー西部にあるIstman Simonの工場では、毎日100万個以上のプラスチック部品を生産している。

Workers have all but disappeared.(労働者はほとんど姿を消した。)

Similar changes are taking place on production lines across Eastern Europe. Rising wages for workers are in conflict with the area’s image as a low-cost production base. So factory owners from Hungary to the Czech Republic and Poland find themselves with little choice but to invest in machinery if they want to remain competitive.(同様の変化が東ヨーロッパ各地の生産ラインでも起きている。

Manufacturing in the area has increased since the European Union expanded eastwards in the 2000s. Since then, companies such as carmakers Audi and Daimler have opened local production lines and the number of parts suppliers has grown. But more recently strong economic growth has led to rising wages and a shortage of workers.(この地域の製造業は2000年代に欧州連合が東方に拡大して以来、成長している。

“Wages are going up, the prices of robots are coming down, so this is the way to get returns,” he said. Simon Plastics is hoping to expand production. But pressured by increasing wages and falling prices, all of the company’s recent investment of over $3 million was spent on automation.(「賃金は上昇し、ロボットの価格が下がっているのですから、これが利益を得る方法です」と彼は言った。

The company has not yet cut any of its 400 jobs. Its owners have found other positions for those whose work robots have replaced. But the company plans to automate the rest of its physical work after a 50 percent jump in operator wages over the past three years.(同社はまだ400人の雇用を全く削減していない。
