School Closings Make Home Learning Hard for Some
April 07, 2020

The new coronavirus crisis has launched a very large, unplanned experiment with online learning in the United States. And it has created problems for schoolchildren with limited internet or no internet service.(新型コロナウイルス危機のために、非常に大規模な予期せぬオンライン学習の実験が合衆国で始まった。

School officials and governments in many areas are trying to give millions of U.S. students without home internet a chance at keeping up with their studies.(多くの地域の学校関係者や政府が、家庭にインターネットがない数百万人の合衆国の生徒たちに勉強で追いつく機会を提供しようとしている。)

Buses with internet service(インターネットサービス付きバス)

Many students in rural South Carolina have been having trouble getting online since schools in the U.S. state closed. But recently, six buses equipped with WiFi internet came to help. The state has sent hundreds of buses to rural areas since schools closed because of the coronavirus crisis.(サウスカロライナ州の農村部では州内の学校が閉鎖されて以降、多くの生徒がインターネットに接続するのに苦労していた。

The buses broadcast high-speed internet in an area the size of a small parking lot. Parents can drive up in their cars and their children can use the internet inside the vehicles.

Now, it appears that schools are likely to be closed for a longer period of time. Philadelphia plans to buy 50,000 Chromebook tablets and begin online schooling by the middle of April.(現在、学校は長期にわたり閉鎖される可能性が高いと考えられている。

Debate Continues over Drug Treatment for COVID-19 in US
April 07, 2020

American politicians and doctors are debating whether to use the drug hydroxychloroquine against the new coronavirus. The drug has been used to treat some COVID-19 patients in the United States. But doctors ordering its use have no idea whether it is working.(アメリカの政治家と医師は、新型コロナウイルスに対してヒドロキシクロロキンという薬を使うべきかどうかについて議論している。

The medicine is among several drugs they experiment with on those infected. The patients differ in severity of sickness, age, sex, pre-existing health condition and other ways. As a result, it is unclear what treatment has helped those who improve or if they would have improved without any treatment at all.(この薬は医師らが感染した人々で実験しているいくつかの医薬品の中の一つだ。

The drug has been around for many years and is a popular treatment for the diseases malaria and lupus.(この薬は何年も前から存在しており、マラリアやエリテマトーデスという病気の治療薬として評価が高い。)

American President Trump is expressing great support for hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19. He has said publicly that he might give the drug a try, although tests have shown that he is not infected with the new coronavirus.(トランプ米大統領は、COVID-19の治療におけるヒドロキシクロロキンに多大な支持を表明している。

Not all members of the Trump administration’s COVID-19 crisis team agree with the president’s judgement on the medicine. The country’s leading infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, supports a more restrained approach to use of the drug while scientists carry out studies on the drug in connection with COVID-19.(トランプ政権のCOVID-19緊急対策チームの全員がこの薬に対する大統領の判断に同意しているわけではない。

New Discovery Suggests Antarctica Once Had Warm Rainforest
April 07, 2020

Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area was very different in the past.(今日、私たちは南極大陸のことを氷と雪がある極端な環境だと知っている。

The evidence was found inside a piece of Earth sediment collected by researchers from under the seafloor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment, they found forest soil estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals.(その証拠は、南極大陸沖合の海底下から研究者が収集した地球堆積物の中から見つかった。

The researchers estimate that the area - about 900 kilometers from the South Pole - had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.(研究者はこの地域の、南極点から約900キロ離れている、年間平均気温は摂氏約12度から13度であったと推定している。

The average yearly temperature in that area is about 40 degrees below zero Celsius.(現在のこの地域の年間平均気温は摂氏マイナス約40度だ。)

He added that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants. While no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.(彼は、植物には木、シダおよび顕花植物が含まれていたと言い加えた。

The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.(研究者は、南極における熱帯雨林の環境は特に驚くべきものだと話している。

Experts Dismiss Claims Linking 5G Technology to Coronavirus
April 06, 2020

Technology and medical experts are dismissing a theory linking the new coronavirus to 5G wireless equipment.(テクノロジーと医療の専門家は、新型コロナウイルスと5Gワイヤレス機器とを関連付ける見解を否定している。)

Officials in Britain have blamed the theory for leading to the destruction of mobile phone transmitters in different parts of the country.(英国の当局者は、国内のさまざまな地域で携帯電話の送信機器が破壊される原因となったとして、この見解を非難している。)

Britain’s Cabinet Officer Michael Gove was asked about the idea that 5G telecommunications equipment could play a part in the spread of the coronavirus. “That is just nonsense, dangerous nonsense as well,” he said.(英国の内閣府担当大臣であるマイケル・ゴーブは、5G通信機器がコロナウイルスの蔓延に関与する可能性があるという考えについて質問された。

In Britain, officials said one of the most serious incidents was a fire attack on a mobile phone tower in the city of Birmingham. The officials said the fire caused major damage although no 5G equipment was attached to the tower.(英国では、当局によると、最も深刻な事件の一つは、バーミンガム市でおきた携帯電話の中継塔への放火だ。

A group representing Britain’s major mobile phone operators said some of its workers had been threatened. Vodafone, the world’s second-largest mobile operator, said the destruction of equipment was now a matter of national security. The company’s head in Britain, Nick Jeffery, condemned the attacks.(英国の大手携帯電話会社を代表するグループは、同社の一部従業員が脅迫されたと述べている。

Scientists Discover New Bacteria that Feeds on Plastic
April 05, 2020

Researchers have identified a new bacterium that feeds on polyurethane, a kind of plastic that is difficult to recycle or destroy.(研究者は、リサイクルや破棄が難しいプラスチックの一種であるポリウレタンを食べる新しい細菌を確認した。)

Scientists say the discovery could help reduce a flood of hard-to-recycle plastics that are ending up in the world’s landfills and polluting oceans.(科学者によれば、この発見は、最後には世界各地の埋め立て地に行き着き、海洋を汚染することになるリサイクル困難なプラスチックの洪水を減らす役に立つ可能性がある。)

A team from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, found the new strain of soil bacteria. It was identified in an area that contained a large amount of plastic waste.(ドイツのライプツィヒにあるヘルムホルツ環境研究センターのチームは、土壌細菌の新しい株を発見した。

The researchers estimated that in 2015, polyurethane made up 3.5 million tons of Europe’s plastics.(研究者の推計によれば、2015年には欧州の全プラスチックのうち350万トンをポリウレタンが占めている。)

One problem is that recycling polyurethane requires a lot of energy. The plastic material does not melt when heated. Most polyurethane-based products end up in landfills, where they can release dangerous chemicals.(問題の一つは、ポリウレタンのリサイクルには多くのエネルギーが必要なことだ。

The team found that the bacterium, identified as Pseudomonas putida, can produce enzymes that eat away at polyurethanes. This would make it possible to break down the material in the environment.(このチームは、シュードモナス・プチダだと同定されたこの細菌がポリウレタンを侵食する酵素を生成できることを発見した。
