Ways to Make Studying More Powerful
April 21, 2020

Many students ask VOA Learning English about studying. They want to know the best ways to improve their learning.(多くの学生がVOA Learning Englishに勉強について尋ねてきます。

In this week’s Education Tips, we will explore four methods you can use: focusing, testing yourself, interleaving and teaching.(今週の教育のヒントでは、利用できる4つの方法について検討します。

Focus

The idea is to use a timer. Let’s say, you set the timer for 20 minutes, and focus only on your studies during that time. You cannot check email, send text messages or do anything aside from your task.(その案は、タイマーを使うことです。

Test yourself

When you are studying, you should test yourself often. If you are using a textbook, then you can do practice questions from the end of each chapter, as we suggested in an earlier Education Tips. You can also find all kinds of online tests and quizzes for many subjects.(勉強しているときは、何度も自分でテストする必要があります。

Interleaving

When most people study, they do “blocked” practice. In other words, they only study one topic at a time.(ほとんどの人は勉強するときに「ひとまとまり」の練習をします。

But research suggests that a different kind of practice, interleaved practice, may be better for long-term learning.(しかし調査によると、異なる種類の練習、つまり交互の練習の方が、長期的な学習に適している可能性があると示されています。)

Teaching

Researchers Fiorella and Mayer wrote that when students actually teach a lesson, “they develop a deeper and more persistent understanding of the material than from solely preparing to teach.”(研究者のFiorellaとMayerは、学生が実際に授業をすると、「ただ教える準備だけをするよりも、教材についてより深く持続的な理解が進む」と書いています。)

Some Countries, US States Ease Anti-Coronavirus Measures
April 21, 2020

With millions of people out of work, several nations are planning to ease anti-coronavirus restrictions on businesses and other activities.(何百万人もの人が失業しているため、いくつかの国では、企業やその他の活動に対するコロナウイルス対策の規制を緩和する計画を立てている。)

The push to reopen has brought warnings from health officials. They say relaxing the stay-at-home restrictions too quickly could bring the virus back.(再開を求める動きは、保健当局からの警告を呼び起こしている。

Spain will begin permitting children out of their homes for short periods next Monday. Denmark announced plans to reopen Tivoli Gardens, the famous amusement park in Copenhagen in May.(スペインは来週の月曜日から、子供たちが短時間、家から出ることを許可する予定だ。

In Austria, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said all shops will reopen at the beginning of May and restaurants in mid-May. He said the government will study the situation every two weeks and added he will “pull the emergency brake if that is necessary.”(オーストリアではセバスティアン・クルツ首相が、商店はすべて5月の初めに再開され、レストランは5月中旬に再開されると語った。

The moves to reopen for business come as unemployment has sharply increased. And the International Monetary Fund has warned the outbreak could lead to the developed world’s worst economic depression since the 1930s.(ビジネスを再開する動きが起きているのは、失業が急激に増加しているためだ。

Lyrics Handwritten by Bob Dylan On Sale for $2.2 Million
April 20, 2020

A paper on which music star Bob Dylan wrote the words to one of his most famous songs, The Times They Are A-Changin,’ has gone on sale. The asking price is $2.2 million dollars, a record amount for such an object if someone pays it.(音楽スターのボブ・ディランが彼の最も有名な曲の一つである「時代は変わる」の歌詞を書いた紙が売りに出されている。

Gary Zimet owns the business Moments in Time, an autograph dealership in Los Angeles. He said that the paper was first owned by Jeff Rosen, a top employee of Dylan’s. Now, Zimet said, it is being sold by an unidentified private collector.(Gary Zimetは、ロサンゼルスにある直筆文書の販売店「Moments in Time」という会社を経営している。

“It’s not an auction. It’s a private sale. First come, first served,” Zimet told Reuters.(「これはオークションではありません。

Similar Dylan papers have been sold for record amounts already. In 2014, a buyer paid $2 million for a paper on which the musician wrote the song Like a Rolling Stone.(同様のディランの紙はすでに記録的な金額で販売されたことがある。

In 2016, Dylan became the only songwriter to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.(2016

Virus Causes Severe Food Shortages in Africa
April 19, 2020

As people in Zimbabwe suffer from hunger, police officers carried out a raid as part of new public health measures. They seized and destroyed three tons of fruits and vegetables by setting fire to them.(ジンバブエの人々が飢えに苦しむ中、新たな公衆衛生対策の一環として警察官は強制捜査を実施した。

The police were enforcing measures for fighting the new coronavirus. They were punishing a group of farmers who had violated restrictions on movement by bringing their produce to a busy market.(警察は新型コロナウイルスと戦うための対策を執行していた。

Lockdowns to slow the spread of the virus have blocked many farmers from getting food to markets. Such measures are in effect in at least 33 African countries. Restrictions on movement have also threatened food aid that goes to rural populations. Many small, neighborhood markets where millions buy their food are closed.(ウイルスの拡散を遅らせるためのロックダウンは、多くの農民が食料を市場に出すことを妨げてきた。

Lockdowns without systems to help the poor “may affect us very, very much,” said Lola Castro. She is regional director in southern Africa for the U.N.’s World Food Program (WFP).(貧しい人々を助ける制度を伴わないロックダウンは「私たちにとても多大な影響を与えかねません」とLola Castroは述べている。

Among those at risk are millions of children usually fed through the WFP's school meals program. A few weeks after the virus arrived in Africa, many schools closed. About 65 million children are now missing out on meals, the WFP told The Associated Press.(危険にさらされている人々の中には、通常はWFPの学校給食プログラムを通じて食事を得ている何百万人もの子供たちがいる。

What's Happening on other Non-coronavirus Stories
April 19, 2020

At the time, the outbreak of a then-unknown coronavirus in China was notable, but by no means the top news story. Several months later there seems to be only one story in the world.(その頃、当時は知られていなかったコロナウイルスの中国での流行は注目に値するものだったが、決してトップニュースではなかった。

Within weeks of the January 1 protest, Hong Kongers turned to “social distancing” to fight the coronavirus from Wuhan, China. By February and March, smaller protests centered on the Hong Kong government’s decision not to fully close its border with mainland China.(1月1日の抗議行動から数週間のうちに、香港人は中国の武漢から来たコロナウイルスと戦うために「社会的距離を置く」ことに取り掛かった。

Heavy rain in February halted the spread of most of Australia’s fires. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service called it the “most devastating” wildfire season. Scientists studying the effect of the fires on threatened animals have had to shut down their research due to the coronavirus crisis. Prime Minister Scott Morrison was criticized for his performance during the fires. But his stronger response to the pandemic has improved his standing with Australians.(2月の大雨によって、オーストラリアの火災のほとんどは拡散が食い止められた。

The January 2 missile strike, which killed Iran’s top military leader, heightened tensions in the Middle East. It led to Iran bombing bases housing United States troops in Iraq and accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian plane, killing all 176 people onboard.(1月2日のミサイル攻撃はイランの最高軍事指導者を殺害し、中東の緊張を高めた。

Within weeks, Iran had become the first country outside China to see large numbers infected with the coronavirus. The Iranian government has since asked the U.S. to lift sanctions while refusing America’s offer of aid.(数週間のうちに、イランは中国以外でコロナウイルスに感染した多数の人々が確認された最初の国になった。
