Peru to Swear-In New President to Calm Unrest
November 17, 2020

Peruvian lawmaker Francisco Sagasti is set to be sworn-in as acting president on Tuesday. Peru’s congress approved the appointment in an effort to calm street protests after the removal of two presidents during the past week.(ペルーの議員であるフランシスコ・サガスティは火曜日に大統領代行に就任することになった。

A week ago, President Martin Vizcarra was removed from office in an impeachment trial. He was replaced by Manuel Merino, who resigned on Sunday after two people died in anti-government protests.(一週間前、マルティン・ビスカラ大統領は弾劾裁判で解任された。

Congress removed the well-liked Vizcarra from office by using a little-known legislative rule. He was accused of taking more than $500,000 dollars in illegal payments while serving as governor in southern Peru from 2011-2014. He denies the charges. Protestors believe he was ousted because of his efforts to stop corruption.(国会は、ほとんど知られていない議会規則を使って人気のあるビスカラを罷免した。

Sagasti is an engineer and former World Bank official. He said on Monday night that he would consider naming Vizcarra to his cabinet.(サガスティはエンジニアであり、世界銀行の元職員だ。

Sagasti will be Peru’s fourth president in less than three years after the departures of Vizcarra and Merino.

Stone Age Women Hunted Big Game, Study Finds
November 15, 2020

In the Stone Age Americas, a woman's place may have been on the hunt, a new study reports.(石器時代のアメリカ大陸では、女性の役割は狩りにあったかもしれないと、新しい研究が発表している。)

The study has archaeologists rethinking ideas about gender roles in prehistoric hunter-gatherer cultures. But some scientists are not so sure about the results.(この研究では、先史時代の狩猟採集文化における性別役割についての考え方を考古学者が再考している。

The new study appeared this month in the publication Science Advances. Archaeologists involved in the research found the remains of a young woman at a 9,000-year-old burial site in Peru. She is buried with what appears to be a complete set of big-game hunting tools: spear points, scrapers, blades and more. “Big-game hunting” means the hunting of very large animals.(新しい研究は今月、ScienceAdvances誌に掲載された。

the scientists told each other “he” must have been a great hunter, (「彼」は優れた狩人だったに違いないと、科学者らは言い合っていた。)

So, was this a special case? Or were prehistoric women hunters more common than thought?(では、これは特殊な事例なのだろうか?

So, the researchers decided to look at published records from 50 years of past digs across North and South America.(そこで研究者らは、南北アメリカ各地での50年にわたる過去の発掘で発表された記録を調べることにした。)

They found that, out of 429 sets of remains, 16 males and 11 females were buried alongside big-game hunting gear. The numbers are not very different.(彼らは、429組の遺体のうち、16人の男性と11人の女性が大物狩りの用具のそばに埋葬されていたことを発見した。

First Passengers Get to Ride ‘Hyperloop’ Transporter
November 13, 2020

The American company Virgin Hyperloop says the high-speed transportation system it is developing has passed its first test with passengers.(アメリカ企業のヴァージン・ハイパーループ社によれば、開発中の高速輸送システムが乗客を乗せた初の試験に成功した。)

The company said the successful test was carried out on November 8 at its 500-meter DevLoop test area in Las Vegas, Nevada.(同社によれば、この成功した試験はネバダ州ラスベガスにある500メートルのDevLoop試験施設で11月8日に実施された。)

The Hyperloop system is based on a technology called magnetic levitation. It uses magnetic fields to create a floating effect for a transportation vehicle and push it forward.(ハイパーループシステムは、磁気浮上と呼ばれる技術に基づいている。

The recent test involved two members of Virgin Hyperloop’s leadership team. The pod carrying them reached speeds of up to 172 kilometers an hour, the company said.(最新の試験には、ヴァージン・ハイパーループの幹部2人が参加した。

Jay Walder is the CEO of Virgin Hyperloop. “I can’t tell you how often I get asked ‘is Hyperloop safe?,’” he said. “With today’s passenger testing, we have successfully answered this question.”(Jay Walderは、ヴァージン・ハイパーループのCEOだ。

Los Angeles-based Hyperloop envisions a future in which its floating pods would carry passengers and cargo at speeds of up to 966 kilometers an hour.(ロサンゼルスを拠点とするハイパーループは、同社の浮遊するポッドが最高時速966キロの速さで乗客と貨物を運ぶ未来を構想している。)

In Ruins, Syria Marks 50 Years of Assad Family Rule
November 12, 2020

On November 13, 1970, a young air force officer from the coastal hills of Syria launched an operation to overthrow the country’s government. Hafez Assad and his supporters were successful. They took control of the government in a bloodless coup.(1970年11月13日、シリアの海岸沿いの丘に住んでいた若い空軍将校が、同国の政府を転覆させる作戦を開始した。

Fifty years later, Assad’s family still rules Syria. Yet the country is in ruins from 10 years of civil war. At least 500,000 people have died in the fighting. The conflict has displaced half of Syria’s population. Large areas are lost from government control. But the son of Hafez Assad, Bashar Assad, has unquestioned rule over what remains.(50年が経過し、アサド家は今もシリアを支配している。

Both father and son have used the same tool to stay in power: repression, violence and rejection of compromise.(父と息子の両方が権力を維持するために同じ手段を使用してきた。

After taking power in 1970, Hafez Assad established a single-party police state - one like that in the former Soviet Union. He moved members of his Alawite sect into positions of power. The Alawites are a minority in Syria, where most people are Sunni Muslim.(1970年に権力を握った後、ハーフィズ・アサドは、旧ソビエト連邦のような一党支配の警察国家を築いた。

Assad also turned Syria into one of the most powerful countries in the Middle East. In the Arab world, he gained respect for his refusal to negotiate on the Golan Heights, an area that Syria lost to Israel in the 1967 war. In 1981, he supported Iran in its war with Iraq while most of the Arab world supported Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Assad later supported the United States-led efforts to liberate Kuwait after Iraq’s 1990 invasion.(アサドはまた、シリアを中東で最も強力な国の一つに変貌さえた。

Study Suggests Gorillas Become More Violent in Crowded Forest
November 11, 2020

Gorillas are very social animals -- up to a point. Crowded areas can make silverbacks more violent, scientists say.(ゴリラはとても社会性のある動物だ。

Researchers recently studied 50 years of data from Rwanda. They found that as the number of gorilla family groups increased, so too did the violent fights between them. Most often, silverbacks led the fights.(研究者は最近、ルワンダの50年間分のデータを調査した。

“Rarely do we think about how an animal’s behavior and social structure can influence population size,” Bergl said. He added, “But it turns out we should, especially for social animals like gorillas.”(「動物の行動や社会構造が個体数の規模にどう影響するのかについて考えることはあまりありません」とBerglは述べている。

While in Rwanda, Stoinski said she saw changes in gorilla behavior beginning about 2007. Around that time, three large family groups broke into many smaller family groups.(ルワンダに滞在中、Stoinskiは2007年頃からゴリラの行動に変化が見られたと述べている。

There were about 10 family groups in the study area. The number of fights between them increased by three times. The number of infant deaths increased by five times.
