Malaysia Group Teaches Refugee Women to Read and Write
December 01, 2020

It could be a picture from any English language classroom. A piece of paper with English letters hangs on the wall. A teacher stands and points to the letters. The students sit on the floor and repeat them out-loud.(それはどんな英語教室でもあり得る光景だ。

The difference in this Malaysian classroom is that the students are not children. They are adult, refugee women, some in their late 50s. They are learning how to read and write, both in Malay and English, for the first time.(このマレーシアの教室が違っているのは生徒が子供ではないことだ。

A group called Women for Refugees offers the weekly classes in a neighborhood outside Kuala Lumpur. Two law students formed the group in September to help migrant women learn to read and to help them find a place in the local community. Another goal of the group is to help the women create a fuller life for themselves, one that includes work.(「難民の為の女性たち」というグループが、クアラルンプール郊外付近で毎週教室を開催している。

Arissa and Davina formed Women for Refugees and found teachers on Instagram. They now have about 20 volunteers. They give weekly, two-hour reading and writing classes in English and Malay. They teach in a worn two-story building that houses about 50 families.(ArissaとDavinaは「難民の為の女性たち」を結成し、インスタグラムで教師を探した。

“It was very essential for us to not pitch the refugee women as a charity, where they are constantly requiring external aid. So we want to equip them with the necessary skills so that they can sustain themselves, so that they aren't dependent on anything else.”(「私たちにとって非常に重要だったのは、難民の女性に施しをしないことです。 ('not pitch the refugee women as a charity'の訳に自信なし)

Huge Puerto Rico Telescope Collapses
December 01, 2020

A huge, already damaged radio telescope in Puerto Rico collapsed on Tuesday. Its 800-metric-ton receiver stand fell onto the reflector dish more than 120 meters below.(プエルトリコにある巨大な、すでに損傷していた電波望遠鏡が火曜日に崩壊した。

The collapse at the Arecibo Observatory shocked scientists who had long used one of the world’s largest radio telescopes.(アレシボ天文台の倒壊は、この世界最大の電波望遠鏡の1つを長い間利用してきた科学者に衝撃を与えている。)

The telescope had survived ocean storms and several earthquakes in its 57 years of operation. It was built in the 1960s with money from the U.S.

Scientists used it to find and follow asteroids on a path to Earth. They also used it to find an unusual kind of star system, a binary pulsar, in 1967. The discovery earned scientists a Nobel Prize in 1974.(科学者はこれを使って、地球に向かう軌道上にある小惑星を見つけて追跡した。

The U.S. National Science Foundation announced on November 19 that the Arecibo Observatory would close permanently. The 305-meter-wide dish was severely damaged in August. NSF scientists believed the cables could deal with the added pressure and weight they were carrying. But on November 6, the main cable broke.(米国国立科学財団は11月19日、アレシボ天文台を完全に閉鎖すると発表した。

The Arecibo telescope was the largest radio telescope in the world for most of its existence. In 2016, it was surpassed by China’s 500-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope.(アレシボの望遠鏡は、それが存在したほとんどの期間において世界最大の電波望遠鏡だった。

WORDS AND THEIR STORIES
Dictionaries Choose ‘Pandemic’ as 2020 Word of the Year
November 30, 2020

Two major dictionary publishers have chosen pandemic as the 2020 word of the year.(2つの大手辞書出版社が2020年の「今年の単語」として「パンデミック」を選定した。)

Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com both declared their choices on Monday.(Merriam-WebsterとDictionary.comはともに月曜日に選択を発表した。)

Searches for pandemic on the Merriam-Webster website rose more than 115,000 percent on March 11 compared to a year earlier. The dictionary’s choice of pandemic should not come as a shock to anyone, said Peter Sokolowski, editor at large for Merriam-Webster.(Merriam-Websterのウェブサイトでのパンデミックの検索は、3月11日に前年比で11万5,000%以上増加した。

Sokolowski noted that pandemic has roots in Latin and Greek. It is a combination of “pan,” meaning for all, and “demos,” for people or population. Pandemic dates to the mid-1600s, when it was used widely for “universal.” Around that time, it also began appearing in medical literature after the plagues of the Middle Ages, he said.(Sokolowskiによれば、パンデミックの起源はラテン語とギリシャ語にある。

Britain’s Cambridge Dictionary chose “quarantine.” It said searches for the word increased in March, when many countries ordered public restrictions to limit the spread of COVID-19.(英国のCambridge Dictionaryは「隔離」を選んだ。

Collins Dictionary, another British publisher, chose “lockdown.” It said the word represents a uniting experience for people across the world. Under lockdown in 2020, Collins said “normal public life is suspended” and “we see few people, and fewer places.” It added that lockdown is now seen as “a public health measure.”(英国の別の出版社であるCollins Dictionaryは、「封鎖」を選択した。 (“we see few people, and fewer places.”

The World Struggles with Restrictions Affecting Holidays
November 27, 2020

Many countries around the world have put in place stronger measures meant to control the spread of the new coronavirus. But these new restrictions are causing tensions because they affect holiday observances and traditions.(世界中の多くの国で、新型コロナウイルスのまん延を抑えるためにより強力な対策が導入されてきた。

Health officials in the United States worked hard to urge people to stay home over Thanksgiving, held on November 26. But many Americans chose to travel and gather anyway.(合衆国の保健当局は、11月26日に行われた感謝祭の間、家に留まるよう人々に促すために懸命に取り組んだ。

On Twitter, Dr. Tatiana Prowell of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine blamed the way the American people think. She wrote: “The U.S. ‘each person for himself’ mindset is killing hundreds of thousands of us.”(ツイッターでは、ジョンズホプキンス大学医学部のTatiana Prowel博士がアメリカの人々の考え方を非難した。

On Wednesday, Germany reported a record 410 COVID-19 deaths within 24 hours. Chancellor Angela Merkel and 16 federal state leaders planned to discuss an extension of restrictions into December and for Christmas and the New Year.(水曜日に、ドイツでは24時間内のCOVID-19による死者が410人に達したという記録が報告された。

French President Emmanuel Macron says France will start easing its COVID-19 restrictions within days. Stores, theaters and movie theaters could reopen by Christmas. The hope is that people can spend the holidays with their families.(フランスのエマニュエル・マクロン大統領は、フランスはCOVID-19の制限を数日以内に緩和し始めると述べている。

Parts of Britain agreed to temporarily ease restrictions for the Christmas holiday and permit up to three households to meet at home.(英国の一部では、クリスマス休暇のために制限を一時的に緩和し、最大3家族が自宅に集まることを許可することに同意した。)

But European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned against easing restrictions too quickly.(しかし、欧州委員会のUrsula von der Leyen委員長は、早すぎる規制の緩和を行わないよう警告している。)

A mother of five children in Gaza is the Palestinian territory’s first woman taxi driver.(ガザで暮らしている5人の子供の母親はパレスチナ自治区で最初の女性タクシー運転手だ。)

Thirty-nine-year-old Naela Abu Jibba says she likes her job although some people make fun of her for doing it.(39歳のNaelaAbu Jibbaは、自分の仕事が好きだがそれをしていることで彼女をからかう人もいると話している。)

“I get lots of offensive (social media) comments,” she recently told Reuters news agency. “But the encouraging comments are far greater.”(「私は(ソーシャルメディアで)沢山の不快なコメントを受け取ります」と彼女は先日ロイター通信社に語っている。

Abu Jibba says some of the negative comments target her driving abilities.(Abu Jibba

“Some say this is a job for men, others say we cause accidents, when the fact is, women are calmer and more careful drivers than men,” she said.(「これは男の仕事だと言う人もいれば、女は事故を起こすと言う人もいます。

Abu Jibba only takes women in her taxi. They must request service ahead of time. Many tell her they feel calmer being driven by her than men.(Abu Jibbaは女性だけを彼女のタクシーに乗せてる。

Abu Jibba studied and got a degree in community service. But she decided to start her taxi business after failing to find work in her field.(Abu Jibbaは社会奉仕を学んで学位を取得した。

Argentine Football Star Maradona Dies at 60
November 25, 2020

Soccer star Diego Armando Maradona died on Wednesday.(サッカー界のスター、ディエゴ・アルマンド・マラドーナが水曜日に死亡した。)

Maradona is said to have suffered a heart attack at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He died less than one month after his 60th birthday.(マラドーナは、アルゼンチンのブエノスアイレスにある自宅で心臓発作を起こしたと言われている。

Maradona grew up in a poor area of Buenos Aires and led Argentina’s national team to victory in the 1986 World Cup. However, he was kicked out of the 1994 World Cup for a drug violation. His career was cut short after years of drug use, overeating and alcoholism.(マラドーナはブエノスアイレスの貧しい地域で育ち、1986年のワールドカップでアルゼンチン代表チームを優勝に導いた。

In 2000, Maradona nearly died of heart failure caused by use of the drug cocaine. But he came back in 2008 to coach the Argentina national team.(2000年にマラドーナは麻薬コカインの使用によって引き起こされた心不全のために死の一歩手前まで行った。

He was one of the most gifted players in the history of the sport. And, he was honored like a god for his skills with the football, as it is called in much of the world. In Argentina, he was called ‘El Dios’, or The God in English. It is a play on words on his number 10 shirt, ‘El Diez,’ in the Spanish language.(彼はこの競技の歴史の中で最も優れた才能のある選手の一人だった。 ('as it is called in much of the world'は意味が分からない。'it'は何だ?)

Some Argentinians consider Maradona the greatest football player ever, edging out Brazilian footballer, Pele. Both were named FIFA Player of the Century in 2000.(アルゼンチン人の中には、ブラジルのサッカー選手であるペレを押しのけて、マラドーナが史上最高のサッカー選手だと考えている人もいる。
