Thai Artist’s Work Shows Political Awakening
December 15, 2020

In some countries, there would not be any problem with art showing French revolutionaries replaced with cartoon cats and birds. But it may be a sensitive subject for Thailand's monarchy.(国によっては、フランスの革命家達が漫画の猫や鳥に置き換えられて描かれている芸術に何の問題もないのだろうが、しかしタイの君主制にとってそれはデリケートな主題かもしれない。)

For artist Yuree Kensaku, the country’s political situation shapes her work. Protesters in Thailand are calling for reform of the monarchy and other changes.(アーティストのYuree Kensakuにとって、この国の政局が彼女の作品を方向づけている。

"People have started their political awakening," said Kensaku.(「人々の政治的な覚醒が始まったのです」とKensakuは述べている。)

The Bangkok Art Biennale is now showing her latest artwork. It combines the influences of her Thai background with her experience making art in La Rochelle, France. There, historical works of art showing times of revolution gave her the ideas she uses now.(バンコク・アートビエンナーレでは現在、彼女の最新の芸術作品が展示されている。

Talk of revolution is sensitive in Thailand. People loyal to the monarchy say that protesters are trying to bring down that system of government. Supporters of the king think protesters are calling for reforms to limit his powers. But the protest leaders say that is not their goal. The protesters want to remove Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and establish a new constitution.(タイでは革命の話は慎重な扱いを要する。

Kensaku’s parents are Thai and Japanese. She was born and raised in Bangkok. She said her work is not meant to be a message about the monarchy.(ケンサクの両親はタイ人と日本人で、彼女はバンコクで生まれ育った。

How Other Democracies Select Leaders
December 14, 2020

Americans did not vote directly for Joe Biden or Donald Trump on Election Day on November 3. That makes the United States different from most democracies.(アメリカ人は11月3日の選挙投票日に、ジョー・バイデンやドナルド・トランプに直接投票はしなかった。

South Africa(南アフリカ)

In 1994, South Africa held its first elections in which citizens of all races were permitted to vote. South Africans vote for political parties rather than for candidates. The party that won the majority of seats in the National Assembly would then be able to elect its own leader as president of South Africa.(1994年に南アフリカで最初の選挙が実施され、そこではすべての人種の市民に選挙権が認められた。

Nelson Mandela, the leader of the African National Congress (ANC), became president in 1994. The party has controlled the country’s politics ever since. However, the ANC won with its smallest majority yet in 2019, with 57 percent of the vote.(アフリカ民族会議(ANC)の党首であるネルソン・マンデラは1994年に大統領に就任した。

Poland(ポーランド)

Poland’s democracy was reborn in 1989 after the fall of communism across eastern Europe. In Poland, a candidate who gets at least 50 percent of the popular vote becomes president. If no candidate gets at least 50 percent, the top two candidates face each other in a second round.(ポーランドの民主主義は、東ヨーロッパ全域で共産主義が崩壊した後、1989年に生まれ変わった。

There has only been one first-round winner, with the re-election in 2000 of Aleksander Kwasniewski. Even Lech Walesa, the famous founder of Poland’s anti-communist Solidarity movement, needed a second-round vote to become Poland’s first popularly elected president.(これまで一度目の選挙で勝利したのは1人だけで、2000年に再選された Aleksander Kwasniewskiだ。

Wuhan: One Year Later
December 10, 2020

Hundreds of people visited a wet market on a recent weekday morning in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. They came to buy fresh vegetables and live animals like fish, frogs and turtles.(最近のある平日の朝、中国中部の都市、武漢で何百人もの人々が生鮮市場を訪れた。

It has been almost one year since Wuhan reported the world’s first cases of COVID-19 in one of its wet markets.(武漢が同市内の生鮮市場の1つで世界初のCOVID-19の症例を報告してから、ほぼ1年になる。)

But as life in many places remains sharply affected by the pandemic, life in Wuhan has largely returned to normal.(多くの場所では生活が依然としてパンデミックの影響を激しく受けているものの、武漢の生活は概ね正常に戻っている。)

“I’m not afraid, what is there to be afraid of?” said Nie Guangzhen, a fish and vegetable seller.(「私は恐れていません、何が恐いというのでしょう?」

Few reminders remain of Wuhan’s early part in the coronavirus pandemic, which has since affected more than 67 million people worldwide.(コロナウイルス大流行における武漢の初期の役割を思い起こさせるものはほとんど残っていない。

China first told the World Health Organization of 27 cases of “viral pneumonia” in Wuhan on December 31, 2019.(中国が、武漢における「ウイルス性肺炎」27症例のことを世界保健機関に最初に伝えたのは、2019年12月31日のことだ。)

Japanese Asteroid Samples Make it Back to Earth
December 09, 2020

A Japanese spacecraft has successfully dropped asteroid samples from space. The samples landed safely in the Australian Outback.(日本の宇宙探査機は小惑星のサンプルを宇宙から落とすことに成功した。

The spacecraft touched down twice on Ryugu, which sits more than 300 million kilometers from Earth. The first touchdown took place in February 2019, when Hayabusa2 collected surface dust samples. Then, in July 2019, the spacecraft collected samples from below the surface of Ryugu. It did so by landing in a hole that it blasted open.(宇宙探査機は、地球から3億キロ以上離れたリュウグウに2回着陸した。

The operation was the first of its kind in the history of space exploration.(この作業は、宇宙探査史上この種のものとしては世界初だった。)

Why an asteroid?(なぜ小惑星なのか?)

JAXA officials say the study of asteroids may also help with future resource development and lead to new ways to protect Earth from collisions with big meteorites.(JAXAの関係者は、小惑星の研究は将来の資源開発にも役立ち、大きな隕石との衝突から地球を守る新しい方法につながる可能性があると述べている。)

What comes next?(次は何をするのか?)

About an hour after separating from the capsule, Hayabusa2 was sent on another mission to a smaller asteroid, called 1998KY26. It is expected to take the spacecraft 11 years to reach that asteroid. Hayabusa2’s new mission aims to study possible ways to prevent large meteorites from hitting Earth.(カプセルを分離してから約1時間後、はやぶさ2は1998KY26と呼ばれる、より小さな小惑星での別のミッションに送り出された。

How US Military Invented America’s Favorite Snacks
December 09, 2020

Many food snacks popular today in the United States were not invented by a cook at a famous restaurant, but rather by food scientists in the U.S. military.(今日の米国で人気がある多くのスナック食品を発明したのは、有名レストランのシェフではなく、むしろ米軍の食品科学者たちだ。)

From instant coffee and Cheetos to packaged cookies and energy bars - those military scientists were tasked to make food for soldiers that could be easily carried, stored, and eaten.(インスタントコーヒーやチートスから、包装されたクッキーやエネルギーバーに至るまで、軍の科学者にとっては、簡単に持ち運び、保管し、そして食べることができる兵士のための食糧を作ることが任務だった。)

The invention of these foods sped up during World War II. At the time, military scientists needed to develop small, but nutritious food for troops.(こうした食品の発明が加速したのは第二次世界大戦中のことだ。

Cheetos, one of America’s favorite cheesy snacks, is another example. They are made using a dehydration process. The military food scientists found a way to remove the water from cheese. This kept cheese from going bad and made it lighter to transport to troops overseas.(アメリカで人気のチーズ入りスナックの1つであるチートスもその一例だ。

Military scientists also discovered that pet food companies were using dehydration to lower water content, but still keeping the food from getting completely dry.(軍の科学者はまた、ペットフード会社が水分含有量を減らすために脱水を使用しているが、それでも食品が完全に乾いてしまわないようにしていることにも気付いた。)
