Official French Dictionary Now Includes Worldwide French Usage
March 23, 2021

仏語の新しい辞書が、フランス国外の仏語話者が使っている語彙を取り入れているという記事。

Have you ever thrown a camel?(あなたはラクダを投げたことがありますか?)

Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would be hard to do.(ラクダは大きくて重い動物なので、投げるのは難しいでしょう。)

But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake.”(しかし、フランス語を話しているコンゴ民主共和国では、「ラクダを投げる」には「つづりを間違える」という意味があります。)

In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term.(これまで、このような語句は正式なフランス語の用語としてフランス政府に認められていませんでした。)

But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people outside of France speak the language. The language has changed over time and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.(しかし最近、フランス文化省が取り組んでいる新しい辞書では、フランス国外の多くの人々がこの言語を話しているという考え方を受け入れています。言語は時間とともに変化しており、西アフリカのコートジボワールやカナダのケベックといった場所では、パリでのあり方とは異なります。)

The new dictionary includes unofficial words like “pourriel,” which means an unwanted email if you are in Canada. It is a word based on “courriel,” which just means an email.(新しい辞書には、「pourriel」などの非公式の単語が含まれています。これは、カナダにいる場合は迷惑メールを意味します。メールを意味している「courriel」を基にした単語です。)

French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the idea of the dictionary in 2018. It now contains about 600,000 terms.(フランスのエマニュエル・マクロン大統領が2018年にこの辞書のアイデアを提案しました。現在、約60万語が記載されています。)

Roselyne Bachelot is the French Culture Minister. She said the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.(Roselyne Bachelotはフランス文化大臣です。彼女は、この辞書はフランス国民6,700万人だけでなく、全世界3億人のフランス語話者のためのものだと述べています。)

Resources Going to mRNA after COVID-19 Success
March 22, 2021

新型コロナのワクチン開発成功で、mRNAを利用した技術への期待が高まっているという記事。

The success of COVID-19 vaccines based on messenger RNA (mRNA) is increasing the use of the new technology on other medical treatments. And scientists say that mRNA could possibly target diseases that do not respond to other drugs.(メッセンジャーRNA(mRNA)を使ったCOVID-19ワクチンの成功により、他の医療での新技術の使用が増加している。そして科学者らによれば、mRNAは他の薬には反応しない疾患を治療の対象とする可能性がある。)

Glenn Hunzinger is with the firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. He told Reuters news agency, “There is more attention and focus on mRNA now that it has proven to be a technology that works.”(Glenn Hunzingerは、プライスウォーターハウスクーパース社に所属している。彼はロイター通信社に、「それが機能する技術であると証明された今、mRNAにより多くの注目と関心が集まっている」と語った。)

During the pandemic, more than $5.2 billion was invested in companies that were developing mRNA vaccines and other treatments. This amount is up from $596 million from 2019. These numbers come from the research firm Roots Analysis.(大流行が起きている間に、mRNAワクチンやその他の治療法を開発している企業に52億ドル以上が投資された。この金額は、2019年の5億9,600万ドルから増加している。これらのデータは、調査会社Roots Analysisによるものだ。)

Roots Analysis say over 150 mRNA vaccines and treatments are in development around the world. Most are still in early animal testing. And more than 30 have reached human testing.(Roots Analysisによると、全世界で150件を超えるmRNAワクチンや治療法が開発されている。そのほとんどはまだ初期の動物実験中だが、人間による治験に達しているものも30件以上ある。)

Most of last year’s money went to COVID-19 projects. But this also permitted companies to research other diseases. For example, Moderna is working on treatments for heart disease, cancer, and rare diseases. Its most advanced non-COVID program is a vaccine for cytomegalovirus, the leading cause of birth defects in the U.S.(昨年の資金のほとんどはCOVID-19プロジェクトに投じられた。しかしこれは、企業が他の疾患を研究することも可能にした。たとえば、Moderna社は心臓病や癌、希少疾患の治療に取り組んでいる。同社の非COVIDプログラムで最も進んでいるのはサイトメガロウイルスのワクチンで、このウイルスは合衆国では先天性欠損症の主要な原因となっている。)

‘A Blessing from God:’ Iraqis Harvest Truffles
March 21, 2021

イラクのトリュフ採りについての記事。

In the Iraqi desert, a 72-year-old woman carefully digs in the sand for treasure.(イラクの砂漠で、72歳の女性が慎重に砂を掘って宝物を探している。)

“Here it is, the truffle, a blessing from God!” says Zahra Buheir.(「ほら、トリュフです。神からの恵です!」とZahraBuheirは話している。)

In her hands, she holds a truffle, a kind of fungus that grows under the ground. It is used in cooking around the world and is a costly food.(彼女が手の中に持っているのはトリュフ。地下で成長する真菌の一種だ。それは世界中の料理に使用されており、高価な食品だ。)

She said, “rain came, and then thunder, bringing truffles up to the surface.”(彼女は、「雨が降って、それから雷が鳴るとトリュフが地面に出てきます」と言った。)

She and her family of seven have spent weeks looking for seasonal truffles. The rare food has provided the family with additional money.(彼女と7人の家族は、何週間もかけて季節のトリュフを探した。珍しい食べ物は家族に追加収入をもたらした。)

Learning to hunt for truffles requires an understanding of the dangers in the desert. The hunters must deal with the severe weather of Iraq’s southern desert. There are dangerous animals and military equipment left from years of war.(トリュフ探しを学ぶには、砂漠の危険を理解する必要がある。採取する人はイラク南部の砂漠の過酷な気候に対処しなければならない。そこには危険な動物もいれば、何年にもわたる戦争で残された軍装備品もある。)

The father of her granddaughter is Mohsen Farhan. He said, “We are afraid of wolves. There are a lot here. And there are mines. A while ago, someone died.”(彼女の孫娘の父親はMohsen Farhanだ。彼は「私たちはオオカミを恐れています。ここにはたくさんいますから。それに地雷もあります。少し前に誰かが死にました」と話している。)

Landmines left over from the Gulf war in 1991 remain unexploded and underground. The explosive devices could be mistaken for truffles by an inexperienced person.(1991年の湾岸戦争で放置された地雷は、爆発しないまま地中に残されている。この爆発物は、経験の浅い人によってトリュフと間違われる可能性がある。)

But Iraq’s economy is in crisis. So, the local truffles are a big help to this truffle-hunting family.(しかし、イラク経済は危機的状況にあり、そのため地元のトリュフはトリュフを採取しているこの一家にとって大きな助けになっている。)

WORDS AND THEIR STORIES
'Green-Eyed Monsters' and Other Uses of 'Green'
March 20, 2021

「緑色」を使った様々な表現を紹介する記事。

Green can be a symbol for many things. In other words, it can represent many different ideas, qualities, or objects in our lives.(緑色は多くのことの象徴になり得ます。言い換えれば、それは人々の生活の中の多様な考え方、性質、または物を表すことができます。)

One of these is money. For example, a greenback is a common expression for a dollar bill…because it is green.(その1つはお金です。たとえば'greenback'はドル紙幣の一般的な表現で、…なぜならそれが緑色だからです。)

Here is another example: green represents environmental causes. So, if a company goes green, they probably have changed to cleaner technology to produce their products.(別の例を次に示します。緑は環境的な要因を表します。したがって企業が'go greeen=環境に配慮'する場合、製品を製造する際に、おそらくより排出物が少ない技術に変更しています。)

Green is also a sign of a beginner. If someone is green to a job or activity, they are new to it. So, for example, if I am green at cooking, I haven’t been cooking for very long. So, I’m probably not very good at it. Just ask my family.(緑は初心者の印でもあります。誰かが仕事や活動に'green=経験が浅い'な場合、彼らはそれを体験するのは初めてです。ですから例えば、私が料理に'green at=不慣れ'だとしたら、私は長い間料理をしていません。私はおそらく料理があまり得意ではありませんから、家族に頼んでください。)

Green can also mean other things -- bad things.(緑は他のことを意味する場合もあります。悪いことを。)

Historians say long ago the Greeks connected a green color on the face with sickness. They might have thought the color came from an overproduction of bile in the body.(歴史家によればずっと昔にギリシャ人が顔の緑色を病気と結びつけました。彼らは、その色が体内の胆汁の過剰産生が原因だと思ったのかもしれません。)

The Greeks also linked green to jealousy. Today, we use green to describe people who are very jealous or envious. One of the expressions is very simple: We say they are “green with envy.”(ギリシャ人はまた、緑色を嫉妬に結びつけました。今日、私たちは非常に嫉妬したり羨ましがっている人を言い表すために緑を使用しています。そうした表現の1つは非常に単純です。その人たちは'green with envy=ひどくねたんでいる'と言います。)

緑色が嫉妬の象徴。ギリシャ人の感覚は不思議だ。

Japan Warms to Alcohol-free Beer during Pandemic
March 18, 2021

日本でノンアルコールビールが売れているという記事。

Because of the coronavirus health crisis, many Japanese people are not doing the things they used to do after work. Parts of Japan, including Tokyo, are currently under rules that restrict people’s movement until March 21. So, while people in Japan still like to drink beer, many are not doing it as often. They are also trying kinds of beer that have very little alcohol or none at all.(コロナウイルスの健康危機のために、多くの日本人はかつて仕事の後にしていたことをしなくなっている。現在、東京を含む日本の一部では、3月21日まで人の移動を制限する規制が行われている。そのため、日本の人々は依然としてビールを飲むのが好きではあるが、多くの人はそれほど頻繁に飲酒していない。人々はまた、アルコールがほとんどあるいはまったく含まれていない種類のビールを試しに飲んでいる。)

Asahi is a large beverage company in Japan. It expects to make 20 percent more money from low-alcohol beer in 2021 compared to last year. Kirin is another company that makes things to drink. It saw sales grow by 10 percent last year and expects another increase this year.(アサヒは日本の大手飲料会社だ。 同社は2021年に前年と比較して低アルコールビールから20%多く収益をあげることを見込んでいる。キリンは飲料を製造している別のメーカーだ。同社は昨年、売上高が10%増加し、今年はさらに増加すると予想している。)

The increase in sales of non-alcoholic beer might be the result of many Japanese people spending more time at home. In the past, they would order beers together while going out. More people are trying to stay healthy, as well.(ノンアルコールビールの売り上げの増加は、多くの日本人が家で過ごす時間が増えた結果かもしれない。以前は、外出先で一緒にビールを注文していたが、健康維持に努めている人も増えている。)

In recent years, many companies started making non-alcoholic beers. They caught on in places like Australia and Germany but not in Japan - until this year.(近年、多くの企業がノンアルコールビールの製造を開始している。そうした製品はオーストラリアやドイツといった地域では人気を博したが、日本では流行しなかった。今年までは。)

The chief of Suntory, another large beverage company in Japan, said people only responded to non-alcoholic beer advertising when the product started to taste better. Many people agree that today’s non-alcoholic beers taste better than they used to.(日本の別の大手飲料会社であるサントリーの経営者によれば、人々がノンアルコールビールの広告に反応するようになったのは、製品の味が良くなり始めたときだ。最近のノンアルコールビールは以前よりも味が良くなったことには、多くの人が同意している。)

Israel Announces Discovery of more Dead Sea Scrolls
March 17, 2021

新たな死海文書が発見されたという記事。

Israeli archaeologists said they have discovered about 80 new pieces of ancient writings known as Dead Sea Scrolls in a desert cave south of Jerusalem.(イスラエルの考古学者は、エルサレムの南にある砂漠の洞窟内で、死海文書として知られている古代の書物の新たな約80片を発見したと発表した。)

The writings are the first new scrolls to be found in 60 years. The writings are religious in nature. They have lines written in Greek. They are believed to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt against the Romans nearly 1,900 years ago.(この書物は、60年ぶりに発見された新しい文書だ。この書物は本質的に宗教的なもので、ギリシャ語で書かれている。それらは約1900年前のローマ人に対するユダヤ人の反乱の際に隠されたと考えられている。)

The Israel Antiquities Authority says, based on the writing style, they likely come from the first century.(イスラエル考古学庁によれば、文体から判断して、これらは1世紀に書かれたものである可能性が高い。)

The new discovery adds to a larger group of Dead Sea Scrolls - a collection of Jewish writings first found in desert caves in the West Bank near Qumran in the 1940s and 1950s.(新たな発見物は、1940年代から1950年代にクムラン近くの西岸にある砂漠の洞窟で最初に発見されたユダヤ教の書物の集まりである死海文書のより大きなグループに加わるものだ。)

Some of the scrolls date to over two thousand years ago. They include the earliest known copies of biblical writings and documents explaining the beliefs of a little understood Jewish group.(文書の中には2000年以上前に遡るものもある。それらの中には、知られている最古の聖書の写本や、ほとんど知られていないユダヤ人集団の信仰を説明している文書も含まれている。)
